I only purchased this car about a month ago and its run just fine....but the check engine light keeps randomly coming on. I ran the code scanner and got these codes
P0118 - Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High Input
P0121 - Throttle Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Range/Performance Problem
p1133 - Sensor Circuit Response Malfunction
P0300 - Diagnostic Code - Random Misfire
P0335 - Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction
p0480 - cooling fan circuit malfunction
P0480 - Cooling fan Primary circuit condition
I replaced sparkplugs as well as spark plug wires when i got the car because both were in very bad condition. I also changed the Coolant temp sensor as well as the thermostat as I was having issues with the Rad. fan not turning on when it should. when I changed the sensor and thermostat the check engine light went off but lo and behold its back on again and still spitting out these codes.
The car seems to run rather well and is decent enough on gas. the only issue I have is that the fan will not go on. I also need to get this car through emissions very soon.
Any ideas on this? Im considering bringing it to the shop on monday.
I cannot figure out how to edit my post but I wanted to add that the check engine light seems to come on and go off as if the problem goes away but comes back basicly at random.
First fill out your profile so we know what car you have to be able to determine what ignition system you have (distributor or distributor-less).
Most of the codes look like they are electrical with the exception of the P0300 (has to do with ignition) and possibly the P0118 ( possibly t-stat stuck either open (more than likely) or closed).

Many codes randomly come back and don't hinder performance much, to start with anyway. some can become more problemsome over time. I would try clearing your codes and see what ones come back immediatly and if any come back over time. From what it looks like, so far, its just error codes and bad sensors. Not sure on the cooling fan, you should check over the circuits for the fan, relays etc.. even hook the fan up to direct power and make sure it is still in working condition. Other scanner programs could/would tell you more info about codes and places to look.
I'm better this was a flood car. OK so P0118 is likely because the coolant temp sensor is shorting to ground (could be wires or internal in the sensor). P0480 is likely because P0118 was keeping the fan on all the time and you burnt out the motor, melted the relay, or blew the fuse. P0121 is either a dead TPS or you have another short. P0335 is the weird one, normally when the CPS is bad the car wont start, or if it goes bad while the car is driving it dies, I got nothing there.

Hey...im sorry about not posting the car info....its a 97 Coupe 2.2L
The rad fan DOES work....I can see that by unplugging the Coolant Temp Sensor. Doing this causes the fan to come on, the relay and fuses are also all just fine.
Im wondering if maybe the ECU is just @!#$ up or something. If there is any other information I could provide to get anymore ideas towards a solution let me know please.
As someone else said, get the codes cleared, or disconnect the battery for about a half hour and reconnect. What to see what codes come back.
So when does the fan not come on? With ac on?
Does it come on when the engine temp gets up to 223 degree's?

I erased the codes but havent gotten around to running the car to see if the codes come back yet.
There is no AC in this car and the temp guage will just go past 75% of the way up and still the fan never kicks in like it seems it should....I dont know the exact temp it hits though. Just common sense seems like it should be kicking on when it hits over 75% of the way up.
see this post and the picture in it.

Is your gauge going higher? GM programs the fan to come on at 223 degree's. Which is very hot, but still safe.
FU Tuning
it will go just a tad bit higher then that.
what kinda get me though is that the temp sensor obviously works....but one of the codes is saying there is an issue (P0118 - Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High Input) and the only time I can get the fan to come on is when I unplug the temp sensor.
I do not think it is getting hot enough, truly.

Well like I said....I erased the codes a few days ago....jus using it as a secondary car at the moment. Hopefully the light will not come back on The car is due for emissions and I have about 20 days left to get it through, this was really my main concern. As long as it passes emissions I will be happy and can probably fix most of the issues myself.
If you have driven the car a few times since clearing the codes, go ahead and check it again. Some codes do not trip the light, but will still be in the ECU.

I would imagine the one code for the coolant sensor coming on is because of it being unplugged while the car is running. If that code is set and active the car should be in limp mode and the fan should be on all the time.
Def do what a few others have said, Clear all the codes and see what comes back up right off the bat.

Our cars do not have a limp mode. You are correct the fan should run if that sensor is disconnected.
