97 Sunfire SE. 2.4. When i get into the higher revs in neutral it takes a long time to wind down. all the power seems to be there, and i still get find MPG. CEL is on and off for 02, but i dont think this would do it considering i have an 0/R X in my 01 mustang and it runs fine. I also have a pretty loud, what sounds like a lifter tick but only after it warms up, which makes no sense to me. I'm hoping these are common on the 2.4 with some helpful hints at how i can eliminate these. Thanks in adv. and sorry for the noob post. its my first 2.4.

First thing, The Oxygen sensor should be replaced. Your car will be more responsive and your MPG's will also go up. Also... It is a little weird to me as well for lifter tick to start when it warms up. Some other things to check would be under the IDI cover. Could be arching and sounding like ticking. Hell... I have even heard the fans making a ticking noise when they kick on sometimes. If none of those, then make sure it is the top end. I personally would replace all the lifters if you have lifter tick. It is a pain to pull it apart and do anything again. Check your oil and make sure it is not low as well. Lastly, These cars are nothing like the 2001 mustang setup. Apples and Oranges if you know what I mean. Ticking noises are VERY common on the 2.4 Twin Cam. Lower end tick seems to be more common, but upper end tick is just about as common.
