When O2 sensors go do the..

When O2 sensors go, do they start to act unpredictably, or just outright fail?

Yesterday I got a CEL that said O2 sensor no signal. The light stayed on, so I cleared it and it came back later that day.
I decided to go pick up a new sensor, so I ran to part source, the light was still on. When I got home, the CEL had turned off.

Is this typical for an O2 sensor that's on its way out, or should I be looking closer at the wiring? (It appears fine)

It depends on the failure, and the type of sensor, switching, afr etc... failures could be low cross counts, slow response times or faulty heater, but most of the ones we get back are response time issues. Unless its contaminated then it results in slow response time any way, FYI 60% of the o2 sensors we get back are fine!

the sensor is still bad. The engine light will come on again. Just replace it.

Ill get @!#$ for saying this but I knew a guy who daughter had a cavalier and about every 6months the o2 would act up and throw a code everytime he would clear the code run the piss out of it for a few minuted and it was fine for another 6months . She still has the car and the light hasn't came on in over a year. So usually when they are bad they are bad but sometimes not. LOL. Its kinda funny story because the guy was a huge redneck but hey it worked.
