Hey guys,
Having this issue on my wife's 1999 Z24
(139,000km).
The other day while driving it, I noticed it kind of chugging a bit. Then the ETS light came on, and minutes after the CEL came on. Starting running very rough.
Brought it home and check the code. It was throwing a
P0301 Cylinder #1 Misfire Detected
I haven't done plugs in a long time, so I replaced the plugs to see if it would make a difference. I cleared the code, and tried it again. Light was off for a while then came back one after about 10 mins at about 80-90kms.
Current Symptoms
- Idle drops under 1000 - Very shaky
- Take off from a stop is very chuggy but seems to smooth out with a little acceleration but not great.
- Currently the CEL is now off - Still runs like crap but no light for the last half hour?? ETS flashed for about 5 minutes and went away.
- Took apart the coil pack and swapped coils to see if there is a difference. None really. Hoping it would throw a different cylinder misfire but nothing yet! wtf.
Any ideas what this might be?
I'm leaning towards a bad Coil Pack Housing?
Could this be caused by bad boots? They look ...ok I guess.
I'm trying to avoid taking this to a mechanic so any help or direction is appreciated.
Thanks guys.
I had a very similar problem about three years ago. It was the coil pack housing, not the boots. One of the springs in the housing burnt up and also burnt up my housing some as well. I had to replace the whole thing. If you replace the coil housing, I would recommend either the BWD or Delphi coil pack housings. Just pull it and inspect the springs and where they sit inside the coil housing.
check the plug in cyl 1. if it looks good then check the housing. theyre known to crack and arc. black streak(s) along the housing would be a tell tale sign of that. if i had to guess i'd say it was a housing problem.
So I bit the bullet and picked up a used coil pack from the wreckers. Brought it home and that was the issue!
I through in new plugs and boots while I was at it. Seemed to do the trick!
Thanks guys!
