Hi out there, just was wondering if anyone could give me some insight before my cavalier goes to the garage, Ok here's what's going on, the other day i was driving and the check engine light came on, didn't notice anything other then light being on it drove perfect i drove about 4 Km's Parked it, started it up about 20 minutes later, check engine light was still on but everything was still shifting and felt fine, so i drove it to store about 4-5 km's parked it for 10 minutes maybe and when fired it up the light was off .. the car was tilted, back down don't know if that made a difference, so i drove off maybe 2-3 km's got home and light stayed off the whole time then started it up drove it maybe a km.. the next morning parked it then later that night i drove about 13-14 km's everything was fine parked stayed somewhere for about an hour n bit started n let it warm up for 5 mins was fine then im driving maybe 2 kms and the light turned on again and i noticed RPM's were sticking between gears i'd shift and rpm's almost wouldn't come down like was slow to drop RPM's so i noticed as well that when i would come to a Stop the RPM's would bounce below 900 too maybe 700 or 800 depending how she feels guess, now i've noticed if i'm parked at a light and turn car off and restart it right away the idle issue goes away and car seems to be ok for a few km's, so today i took car over to mr lube and they did a code scan and pulled up P072 i believe in bank 1 was running to lean, cars going into the garage in a couple of day's just be nice if i can kinda figure this out for now, ne hows going to take her round block now finally and see how runs n stop n restart works, nehows look forward to Insight into this problem Thank's.

Cars been inspected underneath n top and everything looks good with car just to mention like no Leaks etc.

Maybe the air charge temperature sensor. Are you sure it is P072, not P0072?

I can't remember but i remember the guy at mr lube saying was Running lean in the code book and was in bank 1, i just did a google searched andsounds nothing like what the code book said it was earlier, so it was probably P072 i believe, thought was my clutch at first but when u restart the car the car goers back to 100% for a few km's, i also smell when the cars acting up the gas or something, but when running fine on fresh start etc i dont smell any extra gas etc smell.

well, P072 is only four characters. all obd2 are five last I checked. Also, the symtoms you are talking about are exactly what P0072 is. P0072 is a $15 dollar air temperature sensor.

No worries Really so what i have been describing sounds like P0072 i am guessing you know this for a fact ? can i ask how you know but so P0072 is running lean in code book, so guess 15$ is great news here.. good to know if it is P0072 which i will find tomorrow again and write it down, but so what ive been describing sounds like P0072, so 15$ part and hours labour or less. ? Thanks a lot for your Insight, have you had this problem before. ? thanks Again.

Check this link for info

It is easy to replace. Right on your intake setup.

Also, right under the first picture is the description of what that sensor does. P0072 is a code that tells you the sensor voltage is low, as in it has failed, or you have a short to the sensor. 9 out of 10, it is the sensor needing replacement. I also can not be 100% sure, because it could be a couple of other things, like an 02 sensor. Get the code 100% then we can pinpoint the problem. Also, most autoparts will scan and tell you the code as well... for free.

I had the same issue recently. I replaced the o2 sensor (in the manifold) and the TPS (Throttle Position) as well. After I did the o2 sensor the MIL turned off, then back on a few days later. After replacing the TPS the light went off, and so far has remained off. The TPS can sometimes cause the same code. Another place to start checking is the vacuum lines to the throttle body. All those little rubber elbows can develop heat cracks. PO171 is a lean condition, so you're getting more air than the PCM is thinking you're getting, or the 02 sensor needs replacing. It's a simple fix, and the part is usually around $30 USD. AC Delco uses NTK sensors, and I've had good luck with them for 230K miles. Hope that helps.
