im taking the steering column out of my 2000 cavalier, i have everything unpluged and unbolted except for a black line with a cable going through it with a gray connector, its located underneat the steering wheel. Im not quite sure what it does or what it is called but im having trouble trying to get it disconnected. doesn anyone know how to get it to diconnected?
more info on car....is it an auto?...if so shift lock....idk have to see it
i know exactly what ur talking about but i cant remember how i got it undone, i wanna say it has something to do with the shifter but im not 100% sure..
That's the brake transmission shift interlock (aka BTSI) cable.
Put the trans in Park, then turn the key to Run (or On, whatever you call it... just don't start the engine. But I'd hope you have the battery disconnected at this point anyway...). Use a screwdriver to pop out the cable from the ignition switch 'inhibitor' as GM calls it, then release the cable latch securing the cable assembly to the steering column. Should just pull out at this point.
I removed mine entirely.. the other end just pulls off the parking pin on the shifter assembly. Then you can jam the shift knob button down and the key will still come out. I wanted to put a nice manual shift knob on mine.. without a button. Worked awesome.
well i got the steering column out but the one that was in the car the steering column was locked so the cable wouldnt come out so i cut the cable put the new column in and all but now when i go to crank up the car it turns over but thats it what could be the problem? ive even left the battery on til the theft system light went off and still wont turn all the way over what is making it not crank?
When i took the old steering column out i had to cut the i guess its called the btsi cable. i hooked everything back up except for the btsi cable but my car wont start. i unhooked the what looks to be like some sort of sensor to the cable and its still doesn't start up. Ive waited 10 minutes for the theft light to go off and still no go. would having the cable unhooked from the steering column cause the car not to start up? is there something connected to the shifter that would cause it not to start? kinda like what John Lenko did?
The little plug (three wires) that goes to the ignition switch is the Passlock wiring. Did you swap over the ignition switch?
What year is the vehicle? The Passlock re-learn differs between 95-99 and 00-05 cars. You might be doing the re-learn wrong.
The BTSI cable has nothing to do with the engine running. It's something else. The BTSI just stops you from taking an automatic transmission out of park unless you have your foot on the brake, and the car in RUN or ACC. Or removing the key with the car in anything other than park.
Correct.. Sounds like someone got a steering column from a different year???
i Recently replaced my 97 column with a 02 column and mine gave me no trouble at all as far as relearning..

the ignition lock was messed up so i replaced the whole steering column including a new ignition switch. its a 2000 cavalier and the new coulumn looks exactly like the one i replaced, except from a saturn of the same year. (I think the only difference is the weindshield wiper lever). the way i have been trying to start the car is ill have the ignition on until the theft light goes off and then try to start it. but it just keeps turning over but wont start. is this the correct way to reteach the passlock?
I don't know if the Passlock from a Saturn is compatible or not, to be honest. This is the first I've heard of someone replacing the whole column to fix an issue with the lock cylinder!!
As far as the Passlock re-learn goes.. no, you're only doing part of it. You need to do it three times in a row, for ten minutes each. Total one half hour. See the article in the FAQ:

it was cheaper and easier to fix by just replaceing the steering column. i tried what was in the link and it finally started up! thank you so much!

Never thought about swapping a Saturn column before. Now I'm curious what else might work!! ha ha..
