Just replaced, the thermostat the other day. System is full of coolant and circulates normally. Temp sending unit is good cause if low on coolant dash light comes on and also once i put key in ignition. My cooling fan sometimes worked. So i taped the fan wires, and now the cooling fan stays on. While driving, my temp gauge stays at the cold range or moves up just a lil bit. Would like to know, whats going on or what to check please. Thanks.
i accidentally pulled the wires from my temp sensor while redoing my headgasket so i just plugged them back in and every now and again they wiggle loose and my car does the exact same thing...try messing with those wires and see if the temp jumps back up...my symtoms are usually Fan runs constantly, shifts hard and temp gauge acts weird...i have the same 2.2 ohv you do
Where is the ECT sensor at on a 96 cav 2.2 ohv? I prefer, that my cooling fan runs constantly, to prevent overheating.
this is what im talking about, and when mine is loose my fan just runs over time (like blowing dust off the ground) you cant really see it in this pic but its got yellow and brown wires
btw im assuming when the wires are loose it doesnt get a correct temp reading so the fan runs over time to try and prevent overheating...even though the car is running fine
Is your heat hot? or just warm?
Ok. Found the ECT. I would like to know, what tool will fit the ECT in order to get it out, and once i unscrew this will coolant spill out or no? Yes, my heat is hot.
Here is the directions for removing it,

Also the whole manual is at that link if you need more info about location and such.

Yes coolant will spill out. Just unscrew it an screw the new one in as quickly as possible to minimize loss.
The gauge reading low might be because you have the fan on all the time. Don't know why you feel better leaving it on all the time, the engine is designed to run at a certain temperature and running it cool all the time isn't the best thing to do to your engine. The engine runs till it gets to a certain temperature, then the thermostat opens and closes to keep it at that temperature, if it goes above the temperature so far then the cooling fan kicks in to help with the cooling. That is why the fan doesn't run all the time. I think you will do more harm than good trying to keep it operating below temperature. It's your engine, do what makes you feel better.
For some reason. My engine, was overheating. I replaced the thermostat, tested the water pump and other items that relate to the cooling system. Come to find out. My cooling fan had a shortage, and wasnt kicking on when suppose to, which resulted in overheating. So, my mechanic decided to tape cooling fan wires to make the fan work. Will change the ECT sensor and see what happens.
Bob, those sites you listed to explain how to change the ECT doesnt work.

But it is also the whole manual for your car and year, I thought it would help you out. If you want to type in the year and everything for your car you can start here instead.

Just thought it would be helpful.
If the fan wasn't kicking on when it was supposed to, I'd check the relay. Turn on the AC and see if it kicks on. If not check the relay and make sure it is allowing the voltage to go thru, since it sounds like your fan still works. If there was a wiring problem you could just run new wires from the relay to the fan. Maybe you should go to another mechanic, with the proper scan tool you can look and see if the engine temperature sensor and coolant sensor is reading properly instead of guessing and wasting money on sensors. I think if they go bad you should get a code and the check engine light to come on.
Bob- Alright. I'll have to take the tape off the cooling fan wires in order to test the relay with the fan. will let you know what happens later.
Where is the short. I had a similar problem where the actual plug on the fan shorted out and wouldn't get a proper connection. I bought a new fan motor on the spot cause it was pretty cheap. You can get the motor by itself without the whole fan assembly.
Farmer- Believe, the short is where the wires connecting to the fan are. I'll look into the fan motor. Does wires come with the fan motor?
No, wires do not come with the fan motor, if the short is on the connecter end of the harness then you may have to get another end for the harness. In my last post im talking about the part of the fan motor that the harness plugs into. Please use caution if you try this, this is how I figured it out>>>Instead of pulling on the wires(kinda how ya probably had it taped up), reach down to wiggle the actual plug to see if you spark a connection with the motor, if so then most likely the motor needs replacing.(Yes, im hardcore and like to touch things before using a multimeter, lol). Engine will need to reach temp that the fan turns on before trying, I already had a toggle switch hooked up so no wait for me. Or if im not mistaken, you can unplug the temp sensor and it will turn the fan on(someone key in to confirm this). The fan assembly will need to be taken out to replace motor. It will also come out without removing anything else like the radiator, just have patience. Did this in advance parking lot. Would probably be easy if your car isn't lowered. The ground was my problem, lol.
