Ok hopefully someone will be able to help me. I just got a used radiator from a junk yard I think I am getting fluid through it because there is fluid coming from the overflow tank to the drivers side of the car. I unscrewed the bleed valve on the drivers side of the car which is on the same line as the thermostat and after the thermostat and I am getting fluid shooting out of it. So fluid has to be getting past the thermostat in order to be coming out of the bleed valve.
The radiator does not have a cap o. It closed radiator. The only cap on the entire system is the cap on the overflow tank. When at idle I can squeeze the hose that goes from the drivers side of the radiator under the battery and to the top of the engine. However I cannot squeeze another lines. When off I can disconnect the line from the top railed od the engine to the overflow tank and squeeze the line from the radiator to the top rail and fluid will shoot out of the line going to the overflow tank. And when the engine is off I can unscrewed the bleed valve and squeeze the same line and fluid will shoot out of the valve.
I have put a gallon of straight coolant and a gallon of water to make it 50/50. So I know there is enough fluid in Tue system. I honeatly think I have a clog somewhere in the system. But I don't think I am if I am getting fluid throughout the system.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Exactly where is the temp gauge when you consider it to be overheating? Is your fan coming on? Are the floorboards wet? You can squeeze the driver side hose because it does not have an anti-collapsing spring inside of it, the one on the pass. side has this spring so the hose doesn't collapse. Our cars fan tends come on when the gauge goes almost to the 3/4 mark. Check these and that will narrow it down a little more.
The fan does not come on at all. Never has. Have has the car since February and never had an overheating issue. By overheating I mean in the red.
well, the fan is nice to have... You may have a clogged heater core... or a screwed up head gasket... especially if you let it get in the red...
Yeah, you should never let it get in the red, you should always pull over and let it cool down. You can usually check the fan by turning on the AC and it should come on. Make sure the fan is working first of all. Second the thermostat could be stuck closed, so you could try changing it or just taking it out and see if it still gets hot. Also was you having this problem before you changed the radiator ? or after you changed the radiator ? If it was fine before and then quit working after you have to look towards your installation of the radiator or the fact it may be bad. Hopefully you didn't blow a head gasket or warp the head from running it hot, but you have to check those areas out also. Keep us posted.
