I have a 98 Sunfire SE 5-sp winter beater. It just started leaking power steering fluid - like a lot! and at the same time whenever I start the car the dash goes haywire - like if I use something electrical then everything cuts out for a second, the airbag, check engine, abs lights start flashing, the DLRs wont stay on, the tach and speedo drop to 0, but the engine is still running etc - seems like a poor ground.
Now both these issues started around the same time, and I was wondering is it possible that they are one of the same? As in, the power steering fluid is so low the pump is drawing a lot of current and causing the electrical issue? Is it possible, and how likely is it?
I'm just trying to decide between fixing vs scrapping the car. It's a $350 special that I've had for 2 years, so I'm happy with it and realize it has served its time, but also if it only take $100 or so in parts to fix then I'm willing.
I just don't see fixing the power steering and the electrical issue to be financially wise for this car. Any comments, thoughts, opinions?
Thanks.
check ground wire connections under battery tray. seems to be the common denominator around here with haywire electronics.
That is rusted right off - but I did upgrade the big three so I didn't think that wire had any use.
Add a ground from the battery to the tray to make up for that being removed. Trust me - it's an important ground.
Where is it leaking PS fluid from. The pump? A line?
The pump and lines are very easy to replace on that engine config - I've done both in the middle of the winter myself. lol
