axle/hub bearing question
Monday, May 22, 2006 8:17 PM
Ok, I will try to make this brief. I have a 96 Z24 with a loud thumping noise coming from the front passenger side, at 20+ mph, it sounds like I am constantly running over raised strips in the road. When I am taking left hand turns on curves, it goes away, and when turning right, it comes back louder. Now, originally we thought wheel bearing, so we changed it on the passenger side. Took it out, still same problem. I know it isnt coming from the drivers side, you can definitely hear it on the passenger. Just so ya know, it started doing this last year, about 6 months after installing air bags, and rode on a negative camber for a while. We put the car up in the air and ran it, and we can feel the knocking in the axle, but before I go spend the money, wanted to see what you thought, any input is appreciated. I really dont think it is tranny related, cause there is no issues in shifting, and if something was wrong in there, I would think I would have some other symptoms. Thanks in advance

not them either, had the noise on the old set, and just got new wheels and tires mounted and balanced, and it still does it, thanks for the suggestion though, I am just pullin at straws trying to figure out what it could be. I am definitely leaning towards the axle though

what of condition are cv axels look like? I would take a look at youre balljoints see if their is any play, Even tie rods could acting up as well. just get the front of the car up on jack stands, Then with the tires still on, use both hands on each tire try moving them up and down to see if their is any play. if so youre ball joint are wornout. If everything checks out in that area I would look at youre cv axles.

Good Luck.

alright, tie rods are ok, ball joints are fine, guess it pretty much has to be cv axles?!

well, changed the passenger cv axle, and it is still making the noise. Is there an output shaft bearing coming from the tranny to the passenger cv axle that could be making some noise? Any other suggestions?

It may sound like it's coming from the passenger side, but I'll bet it's your driver side hub/bearing. Left tuns take the load off the driver side wheel, right turns put the load back on. It's not something you can detect, actually feel until there is a load on it. I though my driver side rear hub was shot, sounded like it was coming from there. turns out it was my passenger side. I replaced both anyway.

I will check that out, I was told the opposite about the noise going away and coming back depending on which way you turn. thanks for the input, i will definitely look into it

I alos bet it is the wheel bearing. I had this as well. On a rear if turning to the right and noise goes away it is the left. Front is a little different, plus harder to tell which side the noise is coming from.

Same here to. Been doing it for almost 6 months. Changed both front bearings 4 times now to make sure that wasn't it. New in and outer tie rods, ball joints, stuts and mounts, tranny mounts/engine mounts, new axles, and everything new brake related. The front end is all tight but still got the noise. I also get a vibration like the wheel is going to fly off. around 70 and sometimes doesn't start till close to 80. Also if i come in on the brakes it vibrates real bad till i get to about 40.

But other times it doesn't do it. I've also noticed when slowing down before coming in a turn the front end acts loose by swaying i guess you could say. Like one min it wants to pull the next it doesn't. Or wants to turn with a little turn of thw wheel then instead wants to go straight.

isn't tires either does it with my steelies,z24 wheels, my 17's and mmy 16inch eagles i have on my other sunfire. I'm about to sell the thing to be honest.

Wow, this is a weird problem. Well to the guy with the sunfire and bags, dod it start right after the bag setup? If so check the simple stuff. Check to see if the nut in the center of the strut mount bearing is very tight, that could cause it, if not check the 3 nuts on the top of the strut, and check the bolts on the knuckle. Usually bad hubs cause a huge growling noise, not a knocking or thumping noise. A tappin clicking or very slight knock usually means axle shaft/cv joint bad. A lound knocking and pulling or banging usually means ball joints. I want to help more but I would have to see the car and ride in it and hear it myself. Goodluck, keep us posted, and I hope this helps!

Sounds like a caliper. Put the car in the air and put the car in neutral, turn your wheels by hand see if their's friction. Good way to check the bearing the same time is get someone to bar one of the front wheels with a LONG prybar jammed under the tire while you get in and start the car and run it in gear. If you block the left tire and you feel it shake at all from inside the car, then it's your right side bearing. If you block the right side, and feel the shake from inside then it's your left side bearing.

Or you have a bearing going in the tranny...very possible as well.
