Ok, so im lost on this one. I have my girls car here and I cant figure it out. No codes no nothing. Wiring is all good. Im thinking the VSS has something to do with it, but before I go and dump parts at it, I wanna get some ideas first. So here is the issue. Normally when the car first starts when cold and such, the speedo wont work. While at the same time, the car will not shift out of 1st gear. But then the speedo will come back and the car shifts fine like there was nothing wrong with it. Any ideas?? I am at a loss. Thanks guys!!!!!
Oh, and its my girls 00 Z vert with auto and 2.4, forgot to add that in there lol
auto,manual?
a friend has an older cavalier Z24 that had the same sort of issues.. took him a few tries to figure it out but when he did he was amazed at how simple it was..
he dropped the transmission pan and checked out the filter and it turned out the rubber grommet on the top side that connects to the syphon tube/hose was old and dried out to the point of being almost solid... not allowing a good seal.. the grommet itself cost about 0.20 cents but since he was down there he just changed out the filter too...
its a pretty simple and fast job..
maybe an hour tops, simply unbolt pan with a big catch pan to help with spills (some will spill ,carefull not to dump out whole pan) filter just pulls off by hand,no tools needed for that part..new filter slides right on..
Its a Auto. And that would make sense if the tranny was just not shifting, but whatever is wrong its not letting the speedo read, and it wont shift out of first, then after a min or so, the speedo comes back, and the car drives fine.
yeah, same thing happened to the z24, it needed to warm up a bit before it would do anything...
eventually it started taking longer and longer..
without really knowing for sure it is a nice cheap solution to try with very little effort and time..
I'm not sure if the Automatics have a VSS, or Vehicle Speed Sensor, but that'd be the first place I looked if my speedometer suddenly stopped working on my Z24 (Manual). Either that, or the stepper motor for the speedometer suddenly stopped working, but I kind of doubt that.
Its a vss issue, I would check to make sure the sensor is good, I know if the vss is unplugged or not working, the transmission will not shift out of first gear.
