MPG cut in half last week? What can I do?
Sunday, May 06, 2012 9:47 AM
Hello havent been here in awhile. have a 2003 Cavalier 2.2L. for my daily driver, im religious about oil changes 3k miles, and i reset my trip everytime i fill up my tank. Its usually around 400 a tank, the last 2 tanks it has been almost cut in half at about 215 a tank. Air filter is new, air pressure is good. car doesnt burn any oil. Only things I can think of is o2 sensor, or plugs (have about 60k on em). I didnt want to just start tossing parts at the car though without knowing. Any other ideas, of course I have no CEL. Wish It did

correct. 0 symptoms other then bad mpg. Fuel filter was replaced about 5k miles ago, not that a dirty one is going to cut my MPG in half anyway. The car is highly maintained, mobil oil every 3k, tranny fluid change every 20k, air filter about every 10k.. Plugs are about the only thing that could be due, they have about 60k miles on em. I was gonna sea foam and change plugs as my first step

If you have access to a scan tool, look at your fuel trim. If not, spray darn cleaner around all of your intake and vac lines

driving conditions didnt change?

in the tune, driving is based off of throttle percent and rpm. possibly your throttle position sensor is on the fritz? unplugged maybe?

o2 sensor could be the cause, after all, it is what tells the pcm if it is running rich or lean

maybe you just got a bad tank of gas?

i always got 28-31mpg with my 04 cavalier. never had a sudden drop like that.

let us know

When i had a issue with my old J it was a bad cat . Of course this led to being completely gone with it and my S/C motor build lol
