I recently bought a 1993 Toyota Celica with a supra body kit/rims on it for a smooth 1300, only 173k miles on it and it does look real nice. I can get pics if needed but thats for another time.
Problem is, I drove it for about a day and a half, then I went and changed its oil (used Castrol Part-Synthetic) and the morning after it started having HORRIBLE lifter noise. I dropped the oil and made sure there was no metal shavings.
A buddy sounded as though the top of the engine wasn't getting oil, the car has a 2.2 in it.
If ANYONE can help, it would be appreciated.
What weight oil are you using in it?
Canister filter or spin on Filter?
What brand?
Spin on filter, Fram.
Exactly what the original engine came with just uograded to fram.
Could the type of oil filter im using effect getting oil to the lifters? Everyone seems to think its the oil pump but its supposedly brand new
Yes, first thing I'd do is take that fram off, and put a purolator, stp, or a WIX filter on. Fram's are garbage. Purolator can be found at Advance auto, STP at Autozone, and WIX at Napa. Not sure who else sells them.
Do some research online about fram's. They are notorious for causing oil pressure problems. Some people will say they've never had a problem with them, used them all their lives. I've had first hand experience with fram's being junk. 3 beaters I've bought with oil pressure issues all had frams on them. Took off the fram, put on a purolator, and never had another oil pressure issue with them.
Would that cause lifter noise though?
Why was the oil pump replaced? That would have been a serious question for the previous owner.
Lifter noise could be a collapsed lifter, or partially collapsed. Get that fram off there.

Absolutely. The lifter's are after the oil filter. The pump pushes oil through the filter, then up through the lifters/head all that good stuff. So having a bad/defective oil filter will cause head noise, valve noise, lifter noise, and eventually engine failure.
FRAM MUST DIE, or atleast come off....

iv personally never had a problem with fram, but id start with the simplest and easiest thing to do = change the filter...but after reading this i may pay a little more and get another brand

actually, if you switch to a purolator, you'll be getting a vastly superior filter at about $1 less.

x2 - Purolator, STP, and Wix filters are the best, and also the cheapest.
