Rear Hub bolt specifications

I had to change my wheel cylinders in the back of my 02 Sunfire. While removing the hub I had to grind off 1 bolt, and 1 other got stripped just enough so that I don't want to reuse it. Napa doesn't have a listings for this part, GM want $10 a bolt and $5 a nut, but they can't get me the nut in time for when I need the car.

Napa said they could probably get me something similar if they had the specs. They're the 4 bolts that hold the hub to the axel. T50 on the bolt, and 15mm on the nut. Anybody know what grade these bolts are? That is my biggest concern. I don't want to put a lower grade bolt on.

Thanks for the help.

Take one of your bolts into NAPA and ask for a grade 8 bolt that will match that.

I believe they are actually grade 9.5 or 10 if I remember correctly....

NAPA told me they can get me a Hex bolt that is of similar size - my concern is the grade. I don't want to use a weak bolt on it. From trying to drill these mofo's out I can tell you they are some damn hard steel.

How on earth can I find out the grade of steel?

you can tell the grade of a bolt buy the marking on it. im not exactly sure what markings mean what, but im sure it can be found on the internet.

You can tell the grade of MOST bolts by the markings on them. This one has a round head with a female Torx 50, requiring a male T50 to remove. There is no room for markings.

Most likely they are metric 10.8. Jeffie would be the one to ask as he's bought them for the Saturn bracket sales.

Metric grade 12.9... Probably not easily found at a napa... but some specialty hardware stores like Fastenal may be able to help you out... McMaster/Carr may be your best bet.

12.9 eh? How sure are you about this? I need the car ready by friday and I only have a few hours each morning. I either have to try and find some bolts tomorrow, or go try and salvage 4 of them off my older scrap sunfire I have stored away.

My deciding factor as to which one I will attempt depends on the grade. 12.9 is really high grade and not easily found around here. I'm not sure where to find a specialty shop either - I'm in Quebec, never heard of Fastenal.

Thanks for the input

Ok - I had the bolt sitting in Coca Cola all day and now I can see on the head it says "SPS 10.9". Woo! Thanks for all the help.
