Hello Everyone,
I think there is a software bug in the radiator fan control part of the ECU code. The fan did not turn off of its own (after a delay) when the car was shut down.
It is an 05 Cavalier, with manual transmission.
I was idling quite bit before parking, and the radiator fan came on. When I turned off the engine, the fan did not stop. After about 5 minutes (the fan still running) I did start up the engine, and the fan stopped right away.
My other cars, when turning off the engine with a running radiator fan, the fan stops after about a minute of running or so. Those are thermo-switch controlled fans.
Anyone came across this one before?
Peter
Is your car overheating? How hot was it outside? Is your coolant topped up? Check all that. If it does not turn off then there is a problem. If it turns off, then there is no problem, just hot.
5 minutes does seem a tad long for the fan to remain on. But cant be sure my car has been pretty warm by the time i get to work in the morning very hot summer now with nothing but bumper to bumper for 30 min. The fan does remain on after I turn the car off but not sure how long I just leave it to do its thing and head to work. I recommend letting it do its thing next time to see if it will (eventually) turn off.
Thanks for the replies!
The car is in good shape, never ever overheated. Yes, it was warm outside, bit still, I felt the fan was running a bit too long. The fact that it shut down right away after a reboot (starting up the engine) did not help my piece of mind either. I will keep an eye on it!

Sounds like the relay is getting stuck on.
- Your not-so-local, untrained, uncertified, backyard mechanic. But my @!#$ runs
its programmed to run for up to 7minutes with the ignition off depending on condtions.
Yeah, the fan will run after the car is shut off to cool things down. Is your ECT functioning correctly?
