I'm new to the j body world. I recntly bought a 2002 cavi with a 5speed and 2.2 ecotec. It needs a bottom end. Any advice would be appreciated.
Should I pull it out the bottom or top?
Should I get a long or short block.
How do u keep track of all the connectors!?
I've always been a muscle car guy. This is my first efi car that I'm actually doing something to. So I'm basically clueless
It's cake top is easier as far as connectors just label them with some masking tape, just get a whole engine to drop in and make sure it's out of a 2002-05 cavalier any newer and it has a different crank trigger wheel and won't work with our ECM
Just unplug everything and take the axles out and the engine trans will come out as one, by far the asset way to get it out
i find top is the easiest with a 5spd you have to pull the engine more on the belt side. i found if you pull the engine up and just the trans up it slides out. as for connectors gm is smart 1 way and thats theres no duplicat plugs labeling is not needed as they will on go in 1 spot. if there is a duplicate plug its on the other end and only 1 of the connectors reach it.
i never label my connectors

Thanks. We will be pulling it out the top.

the water temp connector is the same as a trans connector I believe. Only know this because I have everything plugged in after my swap and the temp gauge was going nuts.
The way I did it, I took a paint pen of different colors and put a dot on the connector and a dot on what it plugged into so that way all I had to do was match up colors... If there were more colors, I did 2 colored dots. couldnt get the tape to stick to some of the connectors since they had coolant/oil on them.
Could I just leave the harness on and disconnect it from the computer
and still pull it?
I think that would work, however you would have to break or remove the harness things that connect the harness to the body in places..
I told you how to do it, I've done it twice on that car and its worked for me, hell I'll throw another engine in there for you for $500.

I know! But I'm scared @!#$less of screwing up the harness on it.
This is the first car I'm working on that doesn't have a carb. I just wanted to be 1000% sure.
Its already out tho.
the temp and the vss i believe but b othare in different spots and for them to plug in they would have to be pulled tight
if in doubt label them but its a pretty simple swap

I'm not sure if it would be an issue but some of the fuel line and the injectors are diferent from the 02 and the 03-05.

If you are swaping engines
Only difference is the fuel rail (02 was different than 03+) but either rail will work.
