LN2 timing chain/tensioner/gears swap?
Saturday, September 15, 2012 7:51 AM
I need some info on doing the timing chain tensioner, chain, gears on a LN2. It would be in the car. Hanyes manual say to unbolt power sterring pump and move to the side, remove water pump pulley, drop oil pan. Is all this really needed?

I did this just last week. You do need to unbolt the power steering pump and slide it back. It has 4 bolts 3 of which are easy and the bottom bolt on the intake side is a PTA. Take its bolts out and slide it back out of the way you dont need to take all the way out. Jack the car up take the PF wheel off remove both parts of the inner fender wells once again the inner one is a PTA it has a few wire clips and is firmly secured in the front with a clip I just folded mine out of the way just dont break it. You can get to everything thru the wheel well you may have to take out some timing cover bolts from the top.
Watch out on the E torx studs that go thru the oil pan from the timing cover they can be striped easly .

I used a : 24mm socket on the cam gear, 18mm socket on the crank, t40 torx and 11mm on the chain tens., e5 female torx on the timing cover studs,15mm on the crank pull to hub bolts.

Yeah I ended up stripping those studs.

So it is a 24mm on the cam gear? I was thinking 22. Car is torn apart, but did not have a socket to fit the cam gear.

My tensioner was beyond gone. Nothing left of the shoe, just metal. Same for the guide on the other side.
