ld9 bottom end rebuild question.

Can I pull the crank out of the engine while leaving the pistons/connecting rods in the cylinders? I can see why this isn't possible to do with a V style engine but it seems do-able with an inline engine like the ld9 I'm working on. I have the engine on the stand and I'm 99% sure it's suffering from rod knock and I'm thinking about throwing a used bottom end in the thing just to keep it alive but I'd rather not have to take the head off if I don't have to.

Try it. If it doesn't work then it doesn't work.

On the inside my car looks like a fighter jet.

taking it out will be easy... might need a few extra hands to put a crank back in since the connecting rods won't fall exactly in the same way that they came out. are you too lazy to pull the timing set and the cams/head? it'd probably be worth the extra work to pull the whole motor down and do a hone and re ring job if its just a motor for a DD. if its rod knock you could possibly get by with replacing bearings without pulling anything but caps (provided the crank isn't scored or out of whack but it probably is.

Have a nice day.

more than likely the rod is toast if the crank is....

It's nice to be injected but I love being blown.

yeah I know the rod is more than likely toast. Last ld9 I pulled apart with rod knock it was gone and the crank was scored so I'm kind of looking for as used bottom end in good shape. I just don't want to pull the head off, and we'll leave it at that lol. Yes, I know I should pull the engine the whole way apart to clean and inspect for other damage but this engine isn't going to get that much time and money thrown at it. I'm going to try pulling the crank and just leaving the pistons in the bore and see what happens.

Where are you located? My son just wrecked our 99 Cav with an ld9 we just rebuilt this summer. I would consider selling it cheap if you'd rather just swap engines...e-mail me r w farnum at comcast dot net (no spaces) if u r interested.
