PLEASE HELP! FOR LIFE CANT FIND ANSWER!

I'm so sorry about all the cap's lock's, but god i cannot find the answer to my question what so ever..

im going to replace my cluster , i have a 1999 cavalier z-24 im doing it in, is my mileage stored in cluster?? i noticed some people say 95-99 it's in cluster and 00+ in bcm (body control module)
so which one is it??? as i can find a cluster from a high mileage car for cheeper so thus im asking,,,thankyou!!

also i bought this 99 cavalier z-24 from original owner,,overall mint, not a dent etc, but he said he never did timing chain or water pump,,,,, 130k miles on original timing chain, is that ok for cavalier or are they like a honda timing belt that every 100k it has to be swapped?

your 99 is year specific, there are a few gaps to look for, but Im assuming you have the late 99 with the digital trip/odo, It is still stored in the cluster I believe. If your car is manual I have the cluster you need, it would work for auto too but you wouldn't have the PRND indicator.. mine is for sure a late 99 digital cluster with tach from a z24. i'd sell it pretty cheap if its what you need/ if your interested. (has about 135k miles IIRC, its from a car i wrecked last October)

As far as timing chain/water pump its probably about time they be done. 130 is great for stock parts, that car i wrecked had them switched just before 100k which is pretty normal, but i'd have it done soon if I were you, peace of mind thing.. plus its better to do preventative maintenance now as to having to do major repairs later.

Yes, the mileage is stored in your cluster. 1998-1/2 to 1999 is the bastard years in the 96-99 gap that you cannot swap out odometers in the clusters.

But i wondered myself since 1996-1999 all are saved in the cluster, would it matter if you swapped a digital cluster out for a dial? If miles are saved in the cluster, and IF the wiring going back to the cluster is the same, shouldnt it work? Has anybody even tried it? I guess that's a question for a new thread...lol

Ok so if I find a 99 digital with same miles I can swap it and it will be good? (Show mileadge thats on cluster I bougjt ( and yes I was thinking also getting a 1998 manual miles not digi...

Yeah, it will work fine. But when you swap it, odds are your car will not start. follow these instructions for your PCM to recognize the cluster:
"96-99 J-car

1. Attempt to start, then leave the ignition ON. The THEFT SYSTEM light will flash for 10 minutes.

2. When the THEFT SYSTEM light stops flashing, start the car. Once the car is running, the password is learned."

Pretty sure you have to have a 99 digital like i said i have one if you need, not sure if you have auto or manual tho

i put my old 99 Z24cluster in my buddies 98 cavi with 2.2 and it worked. as long as the cluster is digital, it will work.

I switched out a digital 2001 base model cavy cluster for a 2001 digital z24 cluster and all worked fine. Even the tach worked which surprised me cause the org cavy didnt have a tach. I have a 1998 z24 and the odometer is analog not digital and will not work in a car that has a digital odometer. The digital odometer mileage is stored in the pcm cause the mileage stayed the same in the old car after the new cluster was installed. Yes originally the mileages were different for both cars. The timing chain will start to rattle pretty bad when its worn out, BUT if I were you, I would replace it just for peace of mind. If the chain breaks while the car is running, you may a lot more to replace then just a chain and chain components.

Your 99 cluster was only used in late 98s and 99s. You need a cluster from these years. You also need to ensure it has a digital odometer. The odometer reading is stored inside the cluster.

Legally in most states you need to take the new cluster and old cluster to the dealer to have them correct the mileage to the new cluster. If not you can be charged with odometer fraud.

2000-05s the mileage is stored in the BCM, that is why it stayed the same when you swapped the cluster. THIS IS NOT THE CASE IN OLDER 95s-99s.
