Coil Pack Numbering Wrong?

Hey Guys,

Just a small question, when I changed my spark plugs (AutoLite Platinum's) and Spark Plug Wires (AutoLite Professional Wires), I ran Coil Pack #1 (Cyl 1&4) with Terminal 1 going to Cyl 1, Terminal 4 going to Cyl 4, and same for Coil Pack #2. The question I have is what would cause the car to run smoother by swapping the 1 & 4 wires, but keeping the 2 & 3 the same. I found one diagram on google images that mentions switching them, but I thought the coil pack numbering corresponds with the cylinder numbering? When I do 1 to 1 and 4 to 4 the car shudders, and yet when I swap them it is smooth. Explanation? Any explanation would be appreciated !

Which end are you counting as #1?

Since the J-body uses a 'waste spark' system... it fires both coils on the pack at the same time... they're actually throwing an extra spark at the cylinder during the exhaust cycle, as well as the combustion cycle. So #1 and #4 fire at the same time, so do #2 and #3. So really... it makes no difference. I'd say, you have a bad terminal or wire.

The cylinder I am counting as #1 would be the cylinder, when looking at the engine, facing the front of the car, as you would to fill the oil ect, the leftmost cylinder, where the pulleys and the belt that runs over the alternator, AC ect is at. I JUST replaced the spark plug wires, when I noticed this occuring, and another thing is that the coil pack with 1 & 4, the terminals are tarnished, while the coil pack with 2 & 3 are shiny silver. There was arcing occuring on cylinder #1 previously, so that was the original reason I replaced the wires, and spark plugs.
