Will u all give me some troubleshooting method ideas? Let me give u some history and steps I tried so far. its a 98 Chevy cavalier convertible with 2200 engine and auto trans. 134,000 miles. was running great except got to where took longer to start than normal and fuel economy had dropped.
. After it set a while things changed, it would always start when engine cold or if just turned off warm engine and restarted right away or if was quite a while b4 restarting but anything in between and it would only start if held throttle wide open. This made me suspect I had one or more fuel injectors leaking causing a rich condition, or partly clogged, poor spray pattern etc...poss. jelled fuel from sitting... this idea was further supported by the fact that when I ran seafoam fuel cleaner thru it the problem stopped for a while. however now I don't think that was the case and that problem may have been solved by replacing high mileage spark plugs with e3 plugs. The plugs didn't look bad and had proper color.
However while troubleshooting fuel pressure at times was lower than it should have been around 30-35 instead of 40-45 and when not running was not holding pressure which also could cause that problem and possibly affect mpg also. I could get fuel pressure up by clamping fuel return line so I thought fuel pressure regulator was problem, replaced it and replaced fuel injectors at same time since I had already bought some re manufactured ones thinking if nothing else would b better since other ones I suspected of being partly clogged and they were high mileage. However now it went from running smooth to running very rough and it was even worse about not holding fuel pressure when not running. Troubleshooting then became erratic and confusing after much troubleshooting buying a fuel injector tester and replacing fuel pump which did need replaced. I discovered all fuel injectors were OK and flowing fuel as they should with good spray patterns and they weren't leaking. I also found out my new fuel pressure regulator was bad, after switching back to old one engine ran smooth again and now I had proper fuel pressure and it would hold pressure however as I revved engine with car in park engine cuts out at 4k rpm like its hitting rev limiter, I don't think this car has a rev limiter for when its not in gear and I never noticed it b4. Does it with both sets of injectors and fuel no longer seems to b the problem.
Current troubleshooting: wanted to see if was ignition related, only way I could think of was to use an old timing light and see if spark quit when cuts out. On all 4 wires timing light went momentarily dark as engine cut out. So unless timing light can't handle that rpm and quits flashing coincidentally around the same time I'm thinking is ignition related. Oh by the way did this after I replaced plug wires too. So took off coil packs and ignition control module, ICM test OK but have not figured out away to test it at that rpm. Can only see that it has 12 volts to it and switching signal is sent when cranking. Anyone know of another way? Tested coils with multimeter and secondary resistance was OK, primary resistance was frustrating since I could not find anything the right size to put down into slots to touch multimeter leads to, apparently what I used didn't work because they tested bad when they were not. Note have terminal connection kit on order. Since now have new coil pack I can't return hooked it up and it still does the same. Oh also there r no codes being thrown and wiggling wires and connectors makes no difference.
Anyone have any ideas or tips? Any other way to verify ignition is being cut off?
Pretty sure it does have a rev limit, and 4k sounds about right...someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Im not even readin all that stuff...fuk that dawg @!#$. yo tate sounds right homie im thinking like 4,100-4,200
an automatic jbody in neutral will rev limit at 4000rpm
you have no more issues.
Thank u guys sôooooo much! Wow can't believe I spent so much time on that. Put it all back together and while driving is fine. My first car to do that and the cutoff was so rough seemed like something wrong.
My 96 cavalier with a 2.4 was running good but no speedo the gm garge said it was the computer so i tried on from a yard then it wouldn stay running it starts runs for two seconds then dies here's the kicker we put the old on in and same thing and the security light stays on ice even tried a newrockies bypass module the light on it done stay on in lost first time i couldn fix a car
