Ive only seen this on one other thread, but there wasnt a resolution and it was years ago.
But a few months ago I started noticing as I would have an empty tank, Id go to fill up.
With the gas nozzle on full, putting it in the auto fill position with the lever, it'll fill for about 5 to 10 seconds and it clicks off.
Even if I hold the nozzle at full it clicks off. The only way to get it to fill is to run it at the lowest setting and often that still doesnt work and I have to constantly keep filling and watching the gallons to know when its actually full.
Its at multiple gas stations.
The gas gauge works perfectly fine.
I have no gas leak or dont notice any fuel spilling out anywhere.
Im curious if anyone knows of any holes or safety feaures in our fill tubes that might be defective some how causing it to think its full. I know the nozzles have that hole on them, whent he fuel comes back up it will click it off, but that would mean the fuel is filling up near the top righta way. Though none comes out when it does this.
Its annoying as sin...curious to see how many of yall have experienced this and found a solution!
Thanks!

You could have damage or a clog in the filler neck, the vent tube, or the evap vent valve is stuck. If you're trying to fill with the engine running, this will also happen, engine must be off.

Yeah Im going to try to locate/inspect the vent tubes. I didnt have any issues prior to this issue since Ive installed the Racetronix fuel pump last year.
I never fill my car with it running...Ive been told about that since I was a kid. I was going to look up some of the locations of the parts you listed but the DoD finally started blocking Google Images since last week due to morality, health, and welfare issues lol.
Thx for the suggestions

Seeing that your from San Antoinio, a big city, your probably using "High Pressure" fuel filling stations.
GM currently has no solutions for this problem on earlier vehicles.
I know someone with a 20XX silverado with the same issues.
It takes him about 10-15 minutes to fill up from empty.
Try to find an old style "Low Pressure" fill station!!!!!
Hope this helps!
^^ thats a good suggestion..but my situation doesnt really fit that solution. I used the same gas stations (mostly one) for years. Then it just started doing it.
When I get a chance to get under and look at my vent lines or something Im sure its a simple solution. But man I was filling up again today and I had to hold it at like 1/10th. took a while but it worked. And actually on base, their pumps are set at very low pressure. if theres more than 4 pumping at once, on full pressure its like slow at most other places. even does it there (where i filled up today).
its just annoying, but i dont have any fuel leaks that I can see and it doesnt splash back out..it just keeps clicking off is all. But I put a papertowel underneathe the gas pump nozzle(infront of the splash guard where your hands go) anyways on all my cars any time i fill up just incase i ever get splash back.

It's common for this issue to happen after having the fuel tank off. The down side is that the problem is most likely at the end of the filler neck that's on the tank.

god I hope thats not my issue. the problem is I didnt have any problems since last march or April when I installed it. Its more recent. I still havent inspected it, but im hoping its something simple. Ive just been lazy doing anything other than messing with my catch can and changing the oil.

Had the EXACT same thing happen to my 99 Z auto. owned it for about 10 months. it started doing it about 3 months after i started driving it. i never did find a solution, i just kept filling it slowly, and junked it after i was T-boned.

Piss anyone off lately? Sounds like the desired effect when someone puts a tampon in your fuel filler.
damnit...and I noticed I was missing a tampon the other day...maybe I stuffed it in there when I was drunk one night...

Mine does that same thing. It's so annoying. Never had any fuel problems or repairs. I thought it might be with a problem with those gas pumps with the gasket thing that compresses when you put the nozzle in, but nope, it's all the time
Check what I posted in the other recent gas filling problem thread...

Its the purge solenoid or the solenoid on the evap canister. The one up front right behind the power steering pump that one u can try to disconnect the back hose and squirt some wd40 in there it frees it up most of the

I should try the wd40 thing because I still having problems after I replaced the solenoid.

mine will do it still every now and then. I noticed if you pull the nozzle out slightly and hold it to the side a little or can get it to rest to the side it stays on (which points to the purge solenoid i guess). I also have always habituatlly put a paper towel (supplied at all gas stations) between the handle and my gas fill hole (uhh..haha). then i use it to wipe the nozzle off so i dont drip on my paint. if you do the above, be sure to have a paper towel there since it might come back out a bit.
im curious now how the evap canister works..since the car is off when you're pumping and i thought it only worked while on because it pulls vacuum from the intake, without the car on the canister isnt doing its job..? i might be all wet on that

yes its quick and simple u might have to do it 2 to 3 times but it will work. And you car will run better in the heat because it not ingesting fuel vapor all the time that throws the fuel trims all

Well when the vent is working properly, it pulls the pressure out of the gas tank. If it isn't working, the pressure isn't being relieved, but now that I think about it, taking the gas cap off should relieve the pressure.

mine has this prob. the girl i got the car from said it jus started doin it one day.

Yea lately it's been doing ok. But every so often it's wants to act stupid again.

Had this problem over this past winter just closed up and drove around and came back and filled back up and worked no idea what happen.
Do you ever get a woosh when you open the gas cap after driving the car from a full tank to nearly empty?
It sounds to me like it's the evap system... I had a jammed purge valve on an old J and taking the gas cap off was like firing a bullet sometimes! It also took forever to fill so I got used to putting the nozzle in 50% of the way so that there was some air space around it for the tank to breathe.
