Missfire

I have had a random sputtering problem with my 2000 z24 2.4l. I thought I fixed it this last time with acdelco plugs and new adapter. Now 1,000 miles later a little over a month I was driving heard a loud backfire didn't think it came from me and drove home fine. About 1h later I went to drive to get food and everything fine on my way home I lost all power, the car is missing bad, couldn't go over 10mph in 1st gear. I can't even move it in my driveway. I pulled the plugs and the two on the drivers side were black but looked ok and the passenger side looked ok. I went to autozone and bought new plugs and still cannot move the car it shuts off with the smallest movement of the clutch. The car sounds like it is cammed and shakes really bad. Right now the car is blocking my driveway. I was thinking maybe it is the coil pack but autozones website and other places on the Internet show a normal 2 plug coil but I thought it was the white 4 plug plastic thing under the engine cover.

I put my scanner on it and it says multiple random Missfires p0300. Also the check engine light was flashing so I know it was missing bad. The car has 150,000 miles on it.

Your on the right track with the coil pack...

Well I took the cover apart. I never knew there was 2 coil packs in there. Do I just replace the coil packs or should I replace the plastic white piece too?

How does the rubber boots look? Did you replace them? We had a 2.4 come in the shop and that white piece, i don't know what it's called, was cracked and letting the spark jump to the spark plug tubes.

Spark plug boost are brand new. Put them one when i did the plugs a little over a month ago. I replaced these plugs and boost 3 times in the last year or two. I never new the coils were in the cover. Every time I put new plugs on it would run fine for 5-10,000 miles then start missing. That is what was messing with me.

I will buy 2 new coils tomorrow and the coil adapter. Everything is around $50 each so $150 is not to bad over all.

Since it didn't throw any other codes I'm on board with the coil pack idea.

Ok, this sucks though, I have multiples of other gm engines especially 660s but this is the only 2.4 I own so I cannot swap parts.

Fixed it. Two new coils and the coil adapter. Runs great now, I now have power in every gear starting a 2,000 Rpms. Maybe my gas mileage will increase from 22mpg highway.

It is common for the white coil housing to fail. It essentially contains the spark plug "wires". When that happens the arcing can occur between the "wires" and ruin one or both coils. It is typically not possible to detect the failure of the white housing visually or with a volt-ohm meter or a continuity checker. If the problem returns, you should replace the housing and one or both coils.

For more information, you may want to see the following thread about my similar problem and fix-- especially the latter part of the thread where I narrowed the problem down to the housing & coils.

I got a cel light again. It says random missfire p0300 $10 engine, p0400 low catalyst flow bank 1 $10 engine, p0300 random miss $10 electronic, p0400 low catalyst flow bank 1 $10 electronic, p0400 low catalyst flow bank 1 $10 electronic, p0400 low catalyst flow bank 1 $10 electronic.

This came on half way through my 3 hour stip and stayed on the past 3 days. I check the codes today when I got back. Also says my evap is incomplete. I have no idea how long it takes for that to complete as I didn't have time to look it up on alldata yet.

Evap takes FOREVER. You have to drive 55mph for a long time without hitting the brakes.

Anyway, the previous comment is spot on. Replace that whole icm situation and/or look into a 2200 coil swap. That should get you cookin again.
