96 Cavalier 2.2; Running rough, stalling at stop signs!

Howdy everyone... I have a question for you all. My girlfriend just got a 96 Cav 2.2L. She has around 130,000 miles on her.

We had a CEL for o2 switching which I replaced the o2 sensor for. The code has not come back. However now (and when she got it) there is another issue. She is not running right... Idle is rough especially when at a stop sign or light. The exaust is a good color until you rev her up near the limiter when black smoke (thick) comes out. I have tried a few things but no luck

- Changed plugs
- Changed Wires (Holy c**p who was the genius to put the coil packs where they are!!!)
- Replaced the air intake hose as it was cracked by the throttle body.
- Ran fuel cleaner in the tank (Can't remeber the name but really good stuff)
- Cleaned MAF sensor

Tommorrow I was gonna run some seafoam through her and see if that helps but in the meantime would anyone have any ideas of where to look next? I was thinking of the IAC, EGR Valve, Fuel Filter (But she is dumping gas with the black smoke), fuel injectors... Anyone have any ideas?

When stopped at stop sign with foot on the brake you can hear the idle get eratic... as you let off brake she trys to stall and does at times other times she wont. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

My wife's 2.4L had a problem where it started and ran fine before the engine warmed up, but then once the engine warmed up, it idled rough and would hesitate or stall when starting out. It turned out to be a temperature-sensor that was operating out-of-spec. Essentially the temperature-sensor was telling the car's computer that the car was cold and so the computer gave it a too-rich fuel mixture, which was fine until the car warmed up. (It was the equivalent of leaving the choke on even after the car had warmed up.)

I should have added that I don't think her check-engine-light ever came on and I don't think it threw any codes. I remember the mechanic (whom I trust greatly because he always tells me how to fix stuff myself rather than paying him) told me that there would have been practically no way for me to determine the problem or check the sensor without sophisticated, expensive testing equipment because the sensor didn't fail-- it was just operating way out of spec.

These cars do not have a MAF.

I would check the fuel pressure regulator.

vacuum leak maybe? Is what caused mine to do similar, was a line to the TB , nice radius bend on it ...looked fine on the part you could see but the inside of the bend was all but rotted off.

I had the problems you describe on my 2001, I changed my fuel filter which was rusted out and leaking and haven't had a problem since

id definitely check the fuel filter. worked at a couple shops and ive seen some nasty ones. if you can, buy 2. run fuel system cleaner through the intake and in the gas tank with a new fuel filter on. then drive the car around for a couple days and change it again. then you got yourself a clean fuel system.
