My sister-in-law's 98 Cavalier LS needs a 2.4 engine. I haven't been able to find a deal on the correct engine with reasonable miles, although I've run across a couple of 2000s. What's different about the later 2.4s that keeps them from interchanging?
the computer and harnesses, i think....i'm not sure beyond that...
pre mid 99's also have EGR and mid 99 and newer do not have EGR. I'm in the same boat but I need a 2000+ motor with no EGR and all I can find are 98 and earlier
2000+'s have:
No EGR (Changed half way through 99)
High Impedance Injectors (Changed in 99)
9.7:1 Compression Ratio (.2 higher than 96-99)
Intake and Exhaust manifolds changed (Due to EGR)
Smaller starters
Either the Cam or Crank Position sensor is different (changed in 99)

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
Also two-wire knock sensor on 99+ and two-wire first 02 sensor on 00+
I went from a 99 PCM to 00 PCM.. good times.

the 98 older motors have a larger knock sensor than the 99-02
that alone is the bigest hang up of swaping in a newer motor
i put a 01 2.4 in my 97 , and it went easy for m because im using the 99-02 knock sensor , and the 99 pcm so i dont have to worry about egr
most newer heads have the egr passage open , there area few heads the passage is close from what ive heard
the rest of the swap i used , the 97 injector rail and injectors from , all the sensor in the motor were used from the 02 motor
and ive had no ill effects from the swap

I have never seen a 2.4 head that had a closed egr passage, the 99+ just used a different exhaust manifold gasket without a hole for the egr.
There are differences in the head combustion chambers design, i've seen the 2 different heads side by side but can't say for sure what year motors they cam from. I would assume that one was y2k+ and the other was pre 99. This would probably be the reasoning behind the y2k+ motors having 9.7:1 compression vs the older 9.5:1 motors.
I'm looking to built an engine this winter and i wanted to know if i can look for a 2000+ 2.4 for my 97. Will i be allright, will i have any complication that i wont have in pre 99?
thanx!
i dont see why not.
the main difference is the removal of the egr. you will get a CEL but who cares?
sorry to bring this back up from the dead....
question: lets say you spin #3, could you essentially buy a 00+ 2.4 and swap it in your 97, and just switch over everything, and drill a bigger hole for the knock sensor? Switch over the head, fuel rail, both manifolds, starter, and drill the hole bigger for the knock sensor? since you're still using all your old stuff (just a new block and rods etc), it could essentially work correct? is that what you did 97cavi24? thx in advance...

hey ive been wondering the same thing that is my major hang up right now, the knock sensor, and i was running with out it and now i have a slight knock, will teh knock sensor fix my knock?
I think they all slightly knock, thats the first thing I noticed when going under load, you'll notice if you give it more gas it will go away cuz it goes into Power Enrichment mode dumping more fuel at it (richer), the knock sensor should make it better, but mine with knock sensor I can still hear it if I have the window open, like marbles in engine.
lol that is not a normal problem.. lol especially one that a "knock sensor" will fix
you can put any 2.4 engine in any 95-02 cav
i put a 2001 grand am 2.4 in my 96 cavalier with no problem switch a couple things that ive listed 100 times before
"the knock sensor is the biggest hang up" that is the dumbest thing ive ever heard
the upper mount is harder to change then the knock sensor problem..lol
drill out your knock sensor hole out to 12x1.25 screw the old knock sensor right in no problem
anyway yes any 99-02 engine will work in 95-98 just have an EGR code but i live with it who cares
