Seafoam never made my car smoke like a fire, threw my ETS light on and caused it to shift like neutral bombs through all gears for 5 min, dosn't idle as smooth, but i did see some matter when i changed my oil. Sea foam sucks on my end and will never use it again. Might have made my gas milage a tad bit better. Other wise no additives for me.
You shouldn't use oil additives. Everything you need is already in the oil, anything you add might throw it off.

…also, adding stuff like Lucas Oil Treatment or STP just changes your oil viscosity.
Lucas aerates your oil too, which is BAD. I firmly beleive what Jay had to say:

I'm with the other guys who said
NO additives
It doesn't make sense to use cheap oil and then "protect" your engine by putting in all kinds of additives. Most have been proven not to do jack anyway, if they helped so much, then the oil companies would add them to their motor oil in the first place.
Why not use the best oil in the first place, and not have to add anything? Thats what I do, Mobil 1 all the way, and then you know your engine is completely protected without having to put in any oil additive garbage

At VW anytime you buy a serive, not just an oil change, you get Krex engine treatment added to the oil, I don't know if it actually does anything or not we just do it.
If your looking for the best thing to do find a place with a Beilstein engine flush machine. I would swear by that machine, I've presonally seen it restore oil pressure, get rid of knock cause form lack of oil because of sludging, we had a car then went 20K miles with out changeing out and the beilstein flush cleaned out the engine, it works wonders but its not cheap, the filter alone for the machine that gets replaced with every use is $40, we charge $200ish for the service
I use QMI engine treatment that i get from my work. its good for 50,000 miles and has PTFE in it. Its not terribly noticeable on a 4 cylinder car, but my V8 van and my old mustang did run alot smoother afterwards. cost is $24

I use Slick 50 oil treatment usually when I purchase a vehicle and then never again. Slick 50 coats your engine with a plastic based compound, so multiple treatments could clog your oil passages. I know it works b/c I have taken an engine apart after using it and even some of the hard crusted carbon deposits were covered with a hard shiny sheen of something.
I use a heavy duty gas treatment in combination with an oil treatment shorty before every "air clean" test every two years (don't remember the brand name - it comes in a pack marketed for taking e-tests) that loosens your rings and cleans your engine - just to help with the pass factor.

Yup^^^ I sell some of the BG stuff at my place and we sell MOA to customers complaining of valve knock and ticking and we pour that in after an oil change and the ticking goes away.
BG is the @!#$, we use it at the Ford/Chrysler dealership i work at
the only additive ive used, i just tried today, my timing chain was chattering (started after i changed the oil, used mobile one, previous owner used 15-40, will be switching back)

I have a timing chain clatter, when i get about 2k it stops. sounds wicked when you rev it up and it hits below 2k and the chain starts clattering. Did the additive fix your problem? I have not used an additive since i got the car back last feb from GM and this clatter just started about 3 months ago.
well last oil change i ran through a can of SeaFoam, and installed a K&N Oil filter and used a quart of Lucas Oil Treatment as per directions in the place of 1 quart of oil and the car runs excellent. engine is much quieter. I havnt noticed much change with the seafoam but damn does all that smoke look great.. people were like whoa that dude has some SERIOUS car problems and looking at me with sympathy. haha. Id run seafoam over and over again just to see the smoke even if it doesnt do much for me. I do think it made the throttle response a little better and the engine idle smoother. Lucas oil treatment rocks though, it also works well in transmissions (as per the bottle which states if used by directions will not void factory warranty) put some in the tranny and it seems to be quieter and definatly shifts smoother.
ATF in the crank case. Add two qts drive for a while in low gear ranges, then change oil.
not really an additve but can be used to clean engine about every 30,000 miles.
