Not sure if this belongs in the maintenance forum but my dad has a 2003 Buick Regal with a hood liner, a spongy material that encompasses the entire hood area and it really looks sweet. I'm sure it's there for some kind of protection from water, dust, etc. Anybody have this on their J?? Or know of anyone that does??

I think almost every car has it, If I know what you're talking about.
It's to keep the heat from the engine Inside the engine and not prematurely fade the paint on your car. If that pad wasn't there, the metal and paint o your hood would reach a good 200 degrees every time you drove, and would ruin it quicker than if it didn't have one.
Some cars don't have them however, my old Corsica didn't, but my Camaro does. Why? I dunno, GM does some wierd things with their cars.
This is all applicable if you are talking about the same thing I am.
My 00' cav didn't come with one, but I found one on a 96' or 97' cav at a junkyard. Pulled it off and stuck it right back on mine. Everything lined up and all the push pins went into place. I believe that it is alos there for fire saftey.

My 2003 Cavalier doesnt have one is this bad?
my 90 4 dr didn't have one but the Z does
i took mine out from day one, now i have 30k and my hood looks perfect.
if your cars runs good, and doesnt get overly hot it should be fine.
all fiberglass hoods do not have the liner, however fiberglass also doesnt heat up that well.
keith-
bottom line, if you dont have it, you'll be fine.
110,000 miles on my car and no liner.

The linner is just to keep the noise out of the cabin, my 94 had it my 00 didn't, GM bean counters, bunch of cheap dudes. They are trying to make toyota #1 car company in the world.
Joe4, when you said, "The linner is just to keep the noise out of the cabin",
it reminded me.
For those old stove-bolt 6 cyl. Chevy engines there used to be a popular
sound-deading that was a canvas covered pad. It was sold by auto
supply stores and served to dampen valve noises by being laid directly
on top of the rocker arms, held in place by the rocker shaft tower bolts.
Just thinking, what would be wrong to just lay something similar on the
OUTSIDE of the valve cover ? It would be easy to cut some kind of
material to fit and stick on top of the valve cover.
Any further ideas ?
Just go to the junk yard and get a linner.
Joe4, you're right....
A hood liner it will be !
And, I'll also insulate the outside of the valve cover --
"one hand washing the other hand" kind of thing.
