Engine Problems Sputtering - **HELP!**
Sunday, March 06, 2005 2:31 PM
I have a '99 Cavalier Z24 with the 2.4L engine, 5 speed. Just the last couple of days, I noticed that when I would come to a stop, it would start to sputter and almost turn off. On acceleration it is fine though. Just today, it does it all the time now. The first 20 seconds or so when you start it, it runs normal, but as soon as thee RPM's get to about 900, where it usually idles at, the motor starts to sputter and shake, and you can definately here it in the exhaust. The RPM's will drop to 500, then rev back up to 900 and drop again continually. It does it constantly now. If you are going a steady speed, you can feel the car shake. I checked the spark plugs, they are all new and have good connections. I can't figure out what is wrong. Anyone have any suggestions?I need a car to get to school, so I have to get it fixed soon! Any helpful comments would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks in advance.

HOw long has it been since you changed your fuel filter? Sounds like it isn't getting gas and a clogged fuel filter could cause a problem like this.

Could be the map sensor. Think thats the one. Its on the left of the TB with the vacume hose. I had that same issue along with the Ignition Control Module.

^^^ I agree, my 96 am did something like that and it was because a back fire threw the intake blew off the map sensor vacume hose... It's easy to find, it's on the front of the motor on the intake manifold, and it's made of black plastic.. It should be the only vacume hose dead center on the front of it, cheack that it's connected and/or not cracked.. And if thats not it , then look at some other vacume hoses for cracks.

My 99 fire does that. I have to crank it for a good 5- 10 seconds for it to start. then when i hit the gas hard it feels like it is getting too much gas or something. and it feels like it is missing. lemme see if i can describe it with words lol..

mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.mmmmmmm.mmm..mmmmmmm LOL; i was thinking it was my injectors but i am leaning twards a vacum leak.

Okay, I just changed the fuel filter and that was not it. I took apart the intake and cleaned it all out until it was shiny clean. I started it up, and it is still doing the same thing. Now the check engine light came on, but I think that is because I disconnected some sensors. I took a timing light and looked at the timing, and when the engine starts to sputter, the timing goes way off and then when it quits sputtering, it goes back to normal. Any ideas?? Is there any way to check the map sensor? Any particular voltages it should be reading? How do I check it? Any suggestions would be helpful.....Thanks

Okay, just got back from my friend's house. He's got a '00 Z24 and I took his map sensor out and stuck it in mine. No change at all. Still sputters. So that can't be the problem. I'm thinking maybe the ignition control module. Anyone know where that is located?? Is that I viable possibility?? I need a car SOON! I don't know what else to check. I also noticed that my fuel economy has gone down lately and I just noticed that the exhaust is smelling really weird. Not sure how to explain it, but its got a distinct odor in it. Any suggestions? PLEASE HELP!!

does is smell like eggs? that could be your o2 or your cat. take it to the mechanic and have em throw the computer on it and see if your sensors are good. should be showing rich then lean.

No, it doesn't really smell like eggs, it just has this odd odor to it. The exhaust that comes out is a white clous of smoke. Doesn't matter if it is hot or cold, just spews white smoke that smells weird.

White smoke = burning coolant. Head gaskets probably leaking a little in to the cylinders (probably by #4). Would explain sputter at idle, and check coolant level see if its low at all.

And stop inhaling your exhaust, it's not good for you!! lol

I have a similar problem as well when i have change spark plugs, O2 sensors, fuel filter still the same problem. I have not looked at the vacum hoses carefully. But the MAP senor i think that attaches to the Intake manifold is new i replaced that over a year ago.

I was about to change O2 sensors, but I talked to a few people who had the same problem and that didn't fix it for them. Aren't there any mechanics on this forum???

There is another post that has a link that you go and put you vin number in and give you the re flash part number for your car. It helped with my car a little. I now have another engine in my car and it is still doing the same thing. I was told it may have something to do with the first o2 sensor.
