serpentine belt issues!!!!! HELP
Monday, March 14, 2005 3:10 PM
So i needed to get a serpentine belt for the sunfire. 2004 by the way. i bought a Dayco Poly Cog belt from Advance Auto Parts. Their system said it is for the 04 sunfire. The companys website (dayco) said that it will work on the 03 sunfire (2004 was not an option to select no matter which car you chose.) It will NOT fit. I have the tensioner pulled all the way up to losen it and the belt will still not go on. The tensioner cannot move anymore as it is hitting part of th engine up top. any ideas, am i putting the belt on the wrong way or what.

They way that I am putting it on is as follows starting at alternator.
over alt
under tensioner (so it pushes down on it)
around crank
around a/c comp
back to alt.

is this right????

help me please

Learn from my experience:

For my 2.4L

96-02 cavalier LD9 uses 47.5" belt
96-02 sunfire LD9 uses 47.5" belt
all alero LD9 uses 47.5" belt
BUT '01 grand am LD9 uses 48.0" belt

I found this out the hard way; it has to do with the pulley on the alt.

Coinsidentally, the belt for the '04 Grand Am 2.2ECO is 0.5" larger than that of the '04 Sunfire 2.2ECO. TRY P/N 5050405 ('04 Grand Am eco)..

Is the tensioner hitting something or is it the tool you are using the move it??? On my 01 2.4L I had to move the tensioner up a bit, put a block of wood to hold it, and reposition my belt tool to get it to move far enough.

I could swear I was putting it on this way but after reading this pattern and trying for the hundredth time the belt just slipped on.

Have you compared the old & the new belt to ensure they are the same size? I would start there. If that works out OK, then make sure the belt is on the crank pulley and AC compressor properly.

Yes, belts were the same DAYCO brand and model number. It is on know but I guess I wasn't routing it correctly at first. Anyway, now it is on and runs justs fine. The old one was squeaking, thing is it only had about 15k on it. It was a DAYCO too.

I wonder what makes the belts start squeaking like that?

Why didnt you take it in for, 15k, warranty has to still be there.
