Ok, I figure this will be hard to diagnose but I would like a few options if you guys could make them available. Please ask any details i leave out. My car info is updated in my registry. It only ticks as i accelerate and it isnt EXTREMELY loud like a rod being thrown that I had heard once. I can head down the road at 70 and i wont hear it as long as i am staying at 70, if i accelerate, it ticks. It ticks quicker as I accelerate at a faster pace as well. I have been told it was a rod, lifters, rocker arm, and maybe an exhaust leak around the header (I used the flange that pacesetter sent with the header). If i am idling, there is NO ticking. Only when it is in drive and the gas is put in. It tends to start the ticking around 2500 rpm( I also have a 3spd auto if that isnt in the registry). I was told $320 just in labor to check it out. That is the cheapest place in town
. Any ideas? I use 5w30 synthetic motor oil and i have 58k miles on my car. This stinks.
you've got the valve noise that some of us have...its notorious on some cav's and sunfires.. its something in the valve train that does it...maybe adjusting the valves would help...dunno...i just know that alot of us have that same valve train noise..

ahh the good ol valve noise. Havent seen a 2200 or 2.2 that hasnt done it. Mine does it when its cold but then goes away. These things will make valve noises to 200,000 miles.
my moms 99 cavy has 120,000 on it and it dont make that noise. its a 99
96 Sunfire, 2.4L Twin Cam 5 Spd, estimated 180hp
if its really annoying you, adjust your rockers, might make it quiter

it's not ghetto, it's "in progress"
my 99 fire has a slight tick but i can only hear it inside the car and not outside is that the same thing you guys are talkin about??? i have the 2200 in it with 76000 miles.
You could have a noisy Fuel injector .. my wifes 2.2 does it real bad in the morning, but once its warm it gets quite, but it is still there under a load (accelerating).

Hit 200 NA it broke once, Hit 213 it broke again,
Hitting 300 NA is further away than I thought.
Good, so its not a rod. Is this something that is gonna go on me if i dont try to fix it soon? And nothing else to quiet the sound. A shop owner here in town told me to go to 10w30 motor oil instead of 5w to quiet it.
not much u can do if its the rocker making the noise short of pulling the valve cover and adjusting the rockers..i might suggest running some lucas oil stabilizer in your oil, that may quiet it down but probably not...its just something us 2200 owner have to live with..

my Z made a ticking noise like you described for about a month, i thought it was the 2.4 'tick' then it stopped.. because the valve was bent and destroyed the head. got some pics on here somewhere. wasnt pretty. If it is anything in the valve train it can be bad because the stock valve train is made of glass. you probably have a lifter going out. keep a close eye on the noise, if it is loud i would take the head off and replace whats worn before you destroy the head. i have pictures where the lifter shattered and cracked the head.
^^^ yea it kinda sounded like lifter was maybe not extending all the way and the rod jumps out and then back ininstead of it having full contact the entire stroke. Get a hose or a large long screwdriver and place the tip over each rocker position ( valve cover still on), and then place the handle on your ear, maybe you can locate the area the tick is comming from.
