Weird surging at "coasting" throttle - Maintenance and Repair Forum

It's a 1995 Cavalier 2.2L. It only happens at that happy throttle point right in between accelerating and decelerating (aka coasting :p) and it's like a bucking, surging. I've replaced the plugs and air filter. Everything else feels fine with the drivetrain. I thought it had something to do with the cruise control but it does it with that off as well. No check engine lights (but 'm told they don't always come up). Chev dealer wants $87.50/hr to put it on the computer/rack. Thoughts?
sorry, didn't know wher eto put this
so it feel like fuel is shutting on and off? I have seen bad TPS cause this problem. you would see it on a scan tool viewing pulse width.
1979 Impala Sport Coupe Aeroback
Um, maybe kinda? lol. Sometimes it's more pronounced than others. Plus the last time I let my fuel get below 1/4 tank the pump made a bunch of squeeling noises. The car sat for a year before I bought it. What kinds of things should I be looking at? I've already had to replace the drivers front wheel bearing and the rears are being done tomarrow. I'm almost hoping it is a tranny problem only cause that'd give me an excuse to convert to a 5-spd.
Does it feel the same way if you let the car decel in Low 2 (not drive)?

Doh! I never even thought about attempting to recreate this in a different gear. I'll do that today on my way to Pick'n'Pull.
my car did that after i brought it to sears for an oil change i guess they unplugged the mapsensor and they were supposed to reprogram it when they plugged it in but never did . so u might wanna check that.

That was your first mistake

Hahaha. Well I think we're on the right track. Apparently the codes can't be pulled from my year Cav so I'll have to pay the $87/hr for Chev to look at my ECU.
I tried re-creating this in low 2 but the revs were much higher and I couldn't find the sweet spot (if it existed). But hypothetically, if it doesn't do it in low 2 what am I looking at for cause?
Ideally I'd like to swap in an ECOTEC with a 5spd but they're hard to come by.
i kno it def was my first mistake but i was desperate
My 2.2 does it with the EGR plugged in. My EGR has a bad spring in there or something. It's opening to early I believe. Mine is unplugged. I plug it in when I do emmissions testing.
With it plugged in, my car surges through all gears. Lower the gear, the worse it is. With it out, maybe a small bit in 2nd gear.
Disconnect the vacuum hose and plug it with a small bolt and see if it still surges. If it doesn't, you need a new EGR

I don't have a manual for this car yet, where is the EGR located?
Ok, found the EGR and took the vaccuum line off and blew air into it and I can hear the air coming out somewhere and lots of it... is that normal? the car was off. I thought a vaccuum system should be completely sealed at all times? So I've got a coupld of new questions.
1) Does this mean my lines are hooped or is it the EGR?
2) What are the ill-effects of driving around with the line off of the EGR (and the line plugged with a screw)?
3) if I am to replace the line(s) where and what do I ask for? The lines seem like hard formed plastic instead of a rubber tubing that I'm used to.
Listening... mine does the same thing. Same year and engine. Runs great when you rev it or have it under load, but it's a little rough while coasting or idling.
Rice rocket? Since when does just being loud make you qualify as a rocket?
How much power does a Chevy sticker add?
so, as it turns out the knocking from my rear end isn't the wheel bearings, something inside the struts is making a clunk sound during compression/unloading. So New struts I guess. Still need 4 tires and a wheel alignment
U can buy theplastic lines at advance or auto zone or napa auto stores.I have replaced mine on my old 85 had plastic as well.To disconnect the egr will not hurt the car,may just effect the mpg issue. If u remove the egr and clean it make sure the diapram is not junk if its seeable. If not make sure the pintal a metal rod moves freely up and down and reinstall use carb cleaner and a wire brush to clean the carbon deposits of the egr.I hope this is useful, but I would not replace the lines until u clean the egr and see if it changes anything even tho the lines are cheap as dirt if ur feelin like spending less than five bucks and won't some new lines.
I had a 1995 2.2l Cavi that did the same thing! I was never really able to fix it.
Ok, shocks fixed. Turns out there's a hole in the diaphram (sp?) on the EGR. Got one fron an autowrecker that didn't leak but the tip was covered in Carbon. Cleaned it with carb cleaner and a wire brush, checked it for a leak (wasn't one). Put it in, same surging. I popped the hood to look around after driving it and I could hear a constant hiss coming from somewhere in the area where the vacuum lines connected on the throttle body. Pulled off the line and the hissing was still there. I'm at a loss. Also, at least two of my injector connectors is damp looking. Could this hiss sound be bad injectors? If they leak could they cause these symptoms?
