Sorry. gotta ask kinda of a newb question here...
Due to all kind of fun reasons, I haven't got the chance to do a oil change on my
04 cav. It has had the same oil in it since new. (It's about a year old now.)
Before anyone starts to panic, it has yet to hit 3k in mileage. (Little over halfway there)
I really don't like old oil in there, so should I change it now, or break it in a bit more
before in do it.
Oh, the oil itself is still in good shape...looks about half used or so...
oil should be changed at 500 miles to remove assembly lubes, and check for unusual engine wear, you NEED to change it ASAP, granted it won't kill the motor, but can shorten the engines life quite a bit!
Usually they say to change the oil every 3 months or every 3000 miles. So at a minimum change it twice a year. I would say in your case to get out and use the car more and yes by all means change the oil no matter how little mileage you have on the car.............. A car needs to run a minimum of a few times a week and the oil changed to stay healthy.
you have to change your oil each 3months or 5000km specially in this kind of car because timing chain tensioner is hydraulic. I already saw jammed valves because timing chain changed position because hydraulic tensioner missed oil. Oil was too old and a chunk of something blocked oil passage to the tensioner. So crank and cam sensor wasn't timed correctly and pistons curve valves. So for may be 25$, change your oil!!
I have been running it around here and there, even if it isn't far. Even when it was stuck
for almost a month buried by snow, I warmed it up at least once a week...
I plan to change it pretty soon....

sirk798 is on the right track. What I did was change it 1000, 3000, 6000, etc. If you do highway miles every 5000-6000 miles is acceptable.

Hmm...sounds good. But I'm about 450 miles over for that first one.
Goal is dino oil on this oil change, the next one, and mobil 1 in at 6k.
What do you think on that one??
Yeah put mineral oil in, Your engine is still breaking itself in. Your first thousand miles or so your piston rings and other parts are conforming to the cylinders. There are tiny shavings of metal coming off while its doing this and they will float around in your engine until you drain the oil. That's why you have to change more often with a new engine or rebuilt one. You may even be able to see some of these shavings when you drain your oil the first time. Don't worry about it, unless they're still popping up on your third or fourth change

Dave,
You can go on dino or synthetic. Remember there are cars that come with synthetic right out of the factory.
I personally started using synthetic form the very get go.
The theory to change the oil early is so the shavings does not scrape the liners, so its best to change the oil asap. Like I said 1K, 3K, 6K, 9K etc.
Also I have used Duralube additive, I have had very good results with this. But that is optional.

Yep, I know those cars..
You don't think it would be fine to stick with dino the first few? My wif'e cav went two
changes before it got Mobil 1...that car really liked it...
I've been taking it easy on the cav...since i have a beater, the wagon gets the tough
jobs..
Oil must be changed every three monts. Your car oil is now like AJAX, no matter the 3k miles your car has. You are about to trash your car, by now!

Don't be cheap Z.
If your car is leased yhea go for the cheaper dino oil, if you plan on having it for long, go for the synthetic ASAP.
Besides, synthetic is so much more advanced then the dino oil.

Ummm..ok??!
She seems to be in good shape to me.....
AJAX??
She purrs and runs very well, even after getting stuck for a while (thanks to the winter)
Now if I had a buttload of miles on it on the other hand...

Cheap? Me? Hey, who are you calling cheap??
Actually, I was thinking in more of getting getting the stuff out of there first....
I figured after that, it would be cool. But you make a good point about right out of the
factory though....
