I drive a 2002, stock 2200 w/ manual transmission and no a/c.
Recently, I noticed that when i hit about 45km/hour (30mph), my car starts to make a weird vibration and noise, that kind of sounds like an airplane taking off. It doesn't seem noticable with the window down, but you can feel the vibration on the car floor and pedals, not steering wheel.
The faster I go, the louder it gets, and the greater the vibration. It's not shaking, just like a buzzing type noise. Now here's the kicker... the noise goes away when turning right, even just a small bit (i.e. changing lanes). Then when turning the wheels straight, the noise is back. Turning the wheels left keeps the noise the same.
It's not a tranny problem, because I can take it out of gear and it's still there.
Also, there's been this kind of metal on metal squeek when I first start my car up and the wheels start moving, but it only lasts for like 10 tire rotations. The faster I go, the quicker the squeek gets, until it's gone.
I also did have my power steering rack replaced about a year ago.
Any ideas?
Also, it gets louder the faster I go, gets pretty loud around 80km/hour, once over that, the regular road noise drains it out
Sounds very much like it's a bad wheel hub assembly. It's likely that you'll need to replace the bearing as well. Probably the front wheel on the driver's side.

I think I have kinda the same problem, like a rubbing noise that gets faster the more I accelerate. And my car starts to vibrate the faster I go. The mechanic said my cv axle was fine, but I needed new wheel bearings/wheel hub assembly, so I had them replaced and new brakes put on...didn't fix the problem. Cost me over $300 for the wheel hub assembly including labor. I'm thinking my wheels just might be off-balance, but I dunno

Yes, I agree, bearings are shot.
Since it is FWD, the CV bearings could also cause the same prob, kinda difficult to diagnose, but it's basically one or the other.
On a side note, an off-balance wheel will shake the car, but it is the noise described that makes me think otherwise.

What kind of damage could be caused if not replaced? could a wheel fall off or something? sorry for the newb questions
depends on how far you drive it...i would get it fixed asap....its not gonna really ruin anything unless the bearing explodes.. i think u would be ok, but just drive it like its made of glass..

If it goes away when you turn right, and stays the same when you turl left, I would say it is the passenger side wheel bearing.

If you keep driving it like that for too long eventually your wheel could fall off while you're driving

i paid 140cdn last time for the part, it only takes half an hour to replace one. Not too difficult really just get a buddy to help you out.

my advice...drive it as little as you can, and drive it as EASY as you can and you should be able to make it the week or so you need to...my mother had a 92 honda accord with a bad wheel bearing vibration that was going for almost a year... just get it changed as soon as you can and you should be all set. good luck.
That happened to mine. When i got above about 25 mph i would hear a clicking. I knew it had to be something that was spinning because it clicked faster as i went faster.
I replaced mine myself. Took a while as I wasnt exactly sure what I was doing, but once your in there and you see whats going on its not too bad. I forget how much the hub cost me tho, I got it thru my dads friend who owns a auto body shop.

Just an update - I got it fixed today, and yep, it was the passenger side wheel bearing
cost about $120 for the part and about $140 in labour (1.5 hours), but she's all good to go
