why am i going through brake pads so damn fast??
Thursday, April 14, 2005 5:08 PM
ok well about 4 months ago i changed my break pads...front and back...and already they are starting to squeek when i stop. I drive normal and dont slam on my breaks at all, except for the time that a guys @!#$ file cabinets (that werent tied down) flew out of the back of his truck while we were going down the highway at 70 mph....but it just doenst make sense why they are already starting to squeek.

I was just seeing if there was any other causes of brake pads going out this damn quick

Thanks
David

are you using stock pads? or aftermarket ones? id assume that brake wear just comes from driving style, pretty much. 4 months is a very short life though,

How big are your wheels?

And where do you live? My boss dropped a filing cabinet out the back of our work truck a while back on the interstate.

Did you apply anit-squeal to the back of the bracke pads when you installed them? That may be the problem.

Depending on how much the car is driven and type of pad, 4 months may be a reasonable life, in my opinion.

And I dont think anyone will disagree with this... our cars LOVE to gobble up pads for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Use top of line brake pads and some brake quiet on the back of the brake pads which in turn will cause the metal to metal contact to be QUIET! You should do the brake quiet it really helps alot on the noise since most brakes tend to squeal when metal hits metal, four months is obsurd on how long they last regardless on make or model.Use bendix or raybestos pads they are about the best offered on the market. And if u never have replaced or had the rotors machined do so,if the rotors are crappy not smooth they will tear up the brake pads in a hurry.

A typical set of pads on our cars last anywhere from 12-25 thousand miles, depending on driving styles and conditions. I put 4 sets of pads on my car in 2 years. This is what I learned...DON'T BE CHEAP buy good pads. Generic pads are garbage, I had a set of $30 Car Quest pads and they lasted me 12k miles. On the other hand I had a set of AC Delco's last me 22k. Sooo.... buy better pads and you won't be changing them as often. My suggestion to you is to go to www.gravanatuning.com and buy a set of Hawk Performance Pads, and maybe a set of Power Slot rotors, they have a discount when you buy them together. That's what I'm using now and I'm 100% satisfied.

I burnt through a set once in a week, if your hard on them they wont last. We are cursed with only two discs, they do almost all the work. I got better brake pads after the one week set, it was from an extreme breaking situation but ah well it stopped in time...just barely.(108mph-0) The new pads are much better now.

make sure to lubricate the sliders on the calipers so the caliper can move freely and won't make the pads stick on the disc.

Squeaking when stopping isn't a sign of the pads being worn out. Grinding when stopping is. It sounds to me that you didn't put the goop on the back of the pads.

well i guess i see where my problem is....

when i replaced the pads i never applied the "goop" to the pads.....so now i know i guess.

And zach i live in east Texas....the filing cabinet incedent happened in Lovelady, Texas

Another reason your front pads wear out so quick is because a lot of people don't keep their rear drums adjusted. Your brakes are supposed to share the work about 80% front and 20% rear (I think??) and if your rear drums aren't adjusted, they're wearing out that much faster. If you read in your owners manual it tells you how to do this. Also, cheap Autozone or Advance pads wear out faster than most. If you don't have an owners maual (like me lol), here's a how to: back up and pump your brakes a few times. If you're on a hill put it in neutral to go backwards, to check if they're tightened - park facing up a small hill or incline, put your car in park and then pull your ebrake, take your car out of park and put it in neutral. If it starts to coast backwards and doesnt stop after about a foot, then your brakes arent adjusted. If your back brakes are too out of adjustment then you have to do it manually and take off the drums. Hope this helps!!

if you use stock pads on those rims thats the problem.... more rotating mass so it take more to stop them....

I have changed my brake twice on my car and i have 58k on my car. I thnk my first set of pad almost went about 27k-28k. Then again i have a manual and i tend to down shift somewhat to help slow down.

Agree with importfighter a bigger aftermarket rims does require better pads and rotors for that matter which in turn would explain iregular wear so,may a upgrade to better rotors slotted or vented and top grade pads will increase there life not to mention better stopping.Do a upgrade in the long run u will save money and the headache.
