Remove timing chain cover w/o pulling engine?
Friday, April 15, 2005 4:31 AM
Is it possible? I have a cracked timing chain cover (the cast aluminum, not the black shield), is it possible to replace it without pulling the engine? I know it might be an issue to get the timing right again, but anyone done it?

Wish I had known when I had the engine out last summer.

yes I belive it is possible. i think you have to remove one of the motor mounts and jack the engine up to gain access to all of the bolts.

yeah I took mine out with the engine in. Not hard to do, just have to make sure you set the timing correctly afterwards.

Pull both engine mounts off and hold the engine up with a jack. Jack the engine up a few inches and take the top bolts off and then lower the engine and take the rest off. It takes a while.

I changed the cams like that with the engine in the car. It’s not that difficult. Even thought you can use the gasket again, I recommend getting a new one.

Ron, I could use the cover if you have a spare, otherwise it's a boneyard search for one that doesn't require me to buy a complete engine. I've considered letting her drip all summer and pulling the engine over winter, but it leaks too bad.

Glad to hear it's possible, wouldn't mind hearing more success stories. And InfamousZ, thanks for the advice.

not too bad to do...you dont need to pull both mounts....just the upper one with a jack under the engine it gives you enough room to lift and lower the engine to get all 21 bolts (i have done it a few times on my car). just make sure its back in time..PERFECTLY back in time....other then that its easy...to do.

I have an extra cover and housing. need to be cleaned up a bit. I just wish I had an extra tensioner shoe lying around. I had it apart today to fix a leak, and found the tensioner shoe pawl was broken off...so the shoe slides back and forth on the stud. No one around here has one, so I had to order it. Looks like I am taking the girlfriends car to work again...damnit.

Matt-

I'll see what I can do, I won't be able to take a look at it until next weekend though...

im not sure if i need to change my timing chain or if my lifters arent lifting all the way, i have a ticking noise that "goes away" at 3 000rpms or i cant hear it anymore one of the 2, but its more quiet of a ticking noise when the engine is cold, and gets a little luder when warms up, could anyone confirm the problem?

Craig, are you looking to get rid of the cover?

Ron, thanks for looking, I appreciate it. Gives a good excuse to retorque the head bolts I guess.

Jago, sorry bud, can't help you out.

try putting some metal opoxy on it. that stuff that comes in a seringe needle looking thing like the doctors use.(i am tired/up late) it has one side of metal bonding stuff and other opoxy. autozone has it in there opoxy section. just mix that crap up and spread it all over the crack. Or u can JB weld it.

worth a shot, sure it is ghetto, but a ton easier then ripping it all apart..

epoxy, not opoxy...for future reference.

Anyway, Matt, do you need the entire housing and cover, or just the cover, or just the housing? Just send me an email with where you are located and what you need. I may be able to part with it.

Craig, you've got mail.

Any Jake, tried that many times. Epoxy, make-a-gasket, and combinations of them. No luck on stopping the leak. Want to come down and help me with the swap? Also, check my post in the boost forum, seems you might have some input.
