radiator fan not working
Tuesday, April 19, 2005 7:03 AM
okay so heres the deal. a while back my car started heating up at the light not real bad but like two lines on top of the normal place where it always is in the middle. After a while it got worse and i would only drive a little bit and it would go over the middle part this bothered me because it was always just in the middle.as soon as i would start driving though it would cool down like if i got on the highway or something but as soon as i would be at a lite or something it would start heating up. so one of my friends told me to turn the key to the on position were the gauges only move to see if it started. he said it wasnt the thermostat because if it was that it would heat up even when i was onthe highway so he said that it was my fan.what do you all think? Please i dont have much money especially to but a new engine if something happens to the one i have.

Oh is this a good replacement
EBAY FAN

or this one
Another fan
why is the gm one way cheaper than the ebay one?

Sorry for the long post but i thought you all could help me out. thanks

You need to replace the fan, you already did the trouble shooting steps with the heater and a/c .. there is a relay that turns the fan on also. You may want to find a buddy with a cavi and swp them then turn the a/c on and see if it works.

Heres teh motor you can get them at any parts store .. no need for the whole assembly .. takes less than 5 minutes just to change the motor of the assembly.

Parts America or Advance Auto Parts

This ones is 35.00 you can get a life time 1 for 80 in store.

All you need is the motor yes .. it comes apart very easily and goes back togather just as simple. If you lived near me I would give you 1 I have 3 spares.

Yes the radiator control relay is the same from 95-01 for both the 2.2 and 2.4

Before u do that... try to jump start the fan..if the fan start then u'll know that it's no it the problem. Could be a faulty coolant sensor too...a bad ground too. Check everything before u go on buying a fan since u said ur short on money. Don't trow money out of the window so fast. I'm not saying it's not ur fan, but it's worth to check everything first.

Ya, I would hit wire the fan and see if the motor works. I would also check the coolant sensor which tells the fan when to turn on. thanks

i am having a similar problem right now, but my fan WILL work if i turn on my A/C. the car heated up and the temp gauge read 3/4 of the way hot (it never goes past half). soon as i turned on the a/c, the temp dropped like a rock. within less than a minute the temp had returned to normal. am i to assume this is a coolant temp sensor problem?

i know this is an old topic but i just switched my radiator and condensor and now my fan wont turn on, note i have not put any freon into the ac system yet so might that be the prob? i checked the fuses and they seem alright. im a nube so bear wit me. its a 98 cavi 2.2 2200 auto 3 speed.....also now my abs and brake lights come on since i switched the radiator and condensor...and it seems a bit rougher when i switch to reverse and drive....i fix one prob and get many more lol any input would be great.

O.K. if you have abs lights and such on the dash, you may want to check your grounds. Should be a complete set right on the tranny, alot of people hit and break these when dealling with the fan.

you can umper the fan to the bat. its a little hard to do in car. Just take 2 leads and attach to the to pins in side the fan connector, other end to the bat, only do this very quickly. If this works fan is good, I would still check the grounds, then make sure the fan is plugged in all the way. If the a/c turns on at all the fan should kick in .. but no freon probally kills that idea.

O.K. you need to check the wiring that comes from the fan, around the starter area. The wire broke there on both my cavi's. Also did you verify that the new fan worked before installing it. All you need to do is hook it up to a 12volt source very quickly. This will turn the fan on and verify it works. Also check you water level, if you are low on water the temp sensor maynot work correctly. oh darn I forgot about this, did you replace the temp sensor or the fan control switch, this switch tells the fan to come on once it recievs a notice from the ECM. Just a few things to check.

well i did change the temp sensor and i checked this yesterday when i turned on my a/c i checked the connector to the fan and see if it was getting power and it wasnt even giving me a light showering power. What can this mean

you will only get power once a sensor or a switch tells it to turn on, try checking this part:
Never Mind in 97 they moved it into the PCM. I would run wires from the batt. to the fan to see if it works before going any further.

how do u jump the fan i have to wires that have roach clips on the end of them. are those jumpers if so how can i jump the fan to see it works??

honestly its pretty simple except for taking the fan assembly back out. Once you have it out, connect a wire to each 1 of the fan wires, then attach the paositive to the battery. Then touch the graound to the negative side of the batt. if the fan works then its good, if not return it for another 1.
