Just curious .. I bought a 95 cavi for parts (mainly interior) come to find out it has a good engine in it and looks physically the same as the engine in my 96 cav.. I know the cars are run on different computers 95 being obd and 96 being obd ii .. so im betting the main difference between the engines is sensors (could be wrong) . But if it is just sensors i should be able to pull the engine from the 95 and put the sensors on it from the 96 and run fine in theory .... Can anybody confirm this, or atleast tell me other differences i maybe unaware of....?
Thanks
I put a 96 engine in my brother's 95 Sunfire and these are a few things we ran into:
different EGR system. 95 is vacuum operated and 96 is electronic. Different fuel injector harness I believe. We had to use a 96 starter on the 96 engine as the 95 starter wouldn't work properly. One of the sensors (possibly knock or crank position) had a different harness. Other than that, it was pretty straight forward.

did you mean you put a 95 engine in ur brother 96 ?? if so this is the exact answer i was looknig for otherwise this is good info anyways to know the sensors have different harness... thats definitely not a huge problem ...i thought it was alot more than that to do what you stated (being differences in obd I and obd II) so thats why i am guessing you may have got the years backwards accidentally... can you clarify ??? Thanks in advance!
No, he means the 96 in the 95...
Its a completely different engine, regardless of looks. Might want to check the law in your area as well, in many places (if not it being a federal law), you can't put an older engine in a newer vehicle, and sell it.
