I'm planning to do an oil change on my 97 cavy z24, right now i'm using 5w 30 motor oil.. I was planning to change over the synthetic Oil. The question I have is do I need to use a synthetic oil filter as well or can i just use a plain filter with the synthetic oil?..
Thanks..

I know what you are talking about - some of the new "extra capacity" oil filters, now being marketed as being for synthetic oil - such as the Fram XG (Extended Guard) filters. Amsoil filters are also engineered for longer drain intervals.
From what I remember reading, these Fram filters are put together better than their standard "Extra Guard" orange ones. Apparently they don't have cardboard end caps on the filter media, and I think that it's also supported by a metal mesh, to help it maintain its shape and location. Here in Canada, Fram claims "11,000km" of protection. I would say that it's really difficult to put an exact number on how many miles (or km) a filter is going to be useful for without doing proper oil analysis. I would guess though, that assuming that you're using a synthetic oil designed for longer drain intervals, that this would be a fairly conservative figure, unless you're using your car under fairly dusty conditions. Amsoil only recommends changes of their filters at 12,500 MILE intervals.
I have used both the Fram XG and Amsoil filters, and am currently using the Fram ones, as they are easier for me to purchase (at Canadian Tire). If you do decide to go with the Fram one, just be careful that you choose the "XG" series. They also market other "premium" filters, their "TG" (Tough Guard) series, which are good at filtering, but more restrictive, and a "DG" (Double Guard) series, which appear to be the TG ones with Teflon added like an "engine treatment". I wouldn't ever put this type of additive in my engine - I've read numerous reports on how detrimental they can be to various engine parts. They may not really cause any harm, but it's highly unlikely that it would do anything good.
I'm sure that there are other "high capacity" filters out there, but around here, I haven't seen any of them marketed.
If you're planning on running synthetic oil for extended intervals, I would purchase a filter designed for that application. If you plan on still sticking close to your regular intervals, then a regular filter will likely be sufficient.
Note that I have only seen these filters available for the "old" 2.2 like mine, and the 2.4. For the Ecotec, I've only seen the "standard" filters available (at a premium price!). At least they're really easy to change on the Eco, compared at least to the OHV engine.
I hope this has been somewhat helpful. Sorry for the long-winded answer.

is it true that if you change to synthetic oil, you cant go back ??
Nope. You can even mix the two.
