I have a 97 2.2L cavalier and i just been seeing something is leaking. Each time i wipe it with a cloth its pink. Im guessing its tranny fluid? Well in the pics you can't really see what color the leak is
Well there is no smoke in the back of the exhaust. And i think my oil is just perfect. But i know i have a leaky valve cover because i always see oil on it. So what is it?
BTW is the tranny dipstick suppose to be shaped like this at the end?
yes some auto dipsticks are shaped like that.. look around for leaks from ANYTHING..remember, powersteering fluid is also reddish pink in color..i had a line that comes down, makes a horse shoe shape beside the oil pan and goes back in where it comes down...look for spraying fluid and check your power steering reservoir for fluid level.. which side of the motor is it on? if its near the pump then thats probably what it is..good luck!
i think the dipstick is bent like that to act as kind of a baffle to keep fluid from coming back up the dipstick tube..sorry forgot to add that...
My guess is coolant. Is that the head gasket where it is coming from? It looks like it is around the head gasket at the exhaust manifold, which is weeping coolant out.

Thats on the right side of the motor. The coolant resivor is on the left. And since i bought the car a few months ago it looks like the tranny fluid is way over the full mark. Is that safe? The power streering fluid is very low its where it says "ADD". Ill probably get some fluid this week
That is the classic 2.2 head gasket coolant leak, the good part its not leaking into the engine. If you DIY it can be done real cheap, I know I did my 94, same engine, no upgrade until 98.
Check your Transmision Fluid with the car running. It Should tell you on the dipstick and in your owners manual wether the car has to be in park or neautral. If you check it with the car off all the fluid drains out of the torque converter and will show that its over full.
well if the power steering fluid reservoir is very low, theres your answer...how the hell can it be the head gasket if its power steering fluid
but how would power steering fluid get under the exhaust manifold on the oposite side of the engine

power steering pump is on the right side of vehicle...your leak is on the left......totally two different side........you DO have a head gasket leak........not power steering fluid.....the pink fluid is dexcool...........THANK YOU..........
So how much is it to repair it yourself and how much at a shop?
its been awhile since ive priced one out for a customer.........i think by alldata it like 6-8 hours. you could be lookin in the range of 500 or so just in labor.....and figure like 150 for a head set w/bolt and fluids......so if you do it you can save yourself 500 bucks or so but it will take some time
O yea and will this hold up the engine for a while? I don't have the money to repair it right now. Or is this like a "must" repair ASAP thing?
Chances are, that is the head gasket---IF your car uses DEX-COOL coolant. If it is the head gasket, I wouldn't drive it too much longer. I don't know how mechanically inclined you are, but i did 2 head gaskets on that engine myself---it took like 2-3 days the first time, but I did it. If you think you can do it, or have a buddy that will help, do it yourself. Just buy a Haynes manual, a head gasket set, and new head studs and go to town.
Just remember if you overheat the engine you WILL crack the head, the 2.2 head does not take overheating kindly.
It seems to be leaking outward, while not a good thing,is alot better than leaking inwards. On my old 95 cavy the head gasket starting leaking in basically the same place and did so for over 100,000km without the car ever overheating. It was still a pain because I had to fill up coolant quite often, but the car itself was ok.
I would suggest getting it fixed though. Only reason I never did was because the cost of it just wasnt worthwhile on my car. A 2.2L 95 with 280,000km just isnt worth putting the money into, lol
save up money, and get it fixed ASAP....in the meantime just keep a close eye on yoru coolant, and fill it everytime it gets a little low
to me it deffintly looks like a head gasket....i dont see how power steering fluid would get on the block
Might want to check the water outlet as well. Thats the point where the radiator hose attaches to the head up top in you picture.
