Im in the process of swapping my dead water pump on my 98 Z24. I was just curious about the chain tensioner. Im assuming it is the small motor looking thing with the cylinder coming out of it and pressing against the lower chain guide? It has 2 bolts, do I just remove those? Is there anything I need to know about putting it back in? Can I just remove some of the other chain guides instead of pulling the tensioner?

You have to reset it. and yes, those two bolts hold it in but you shouldn't have to remove it I think. The water pump should go in at an angle and then when you bolt it down, it will tighen against the chain. Thats how I did mine.
How would I reset it?

push the plunger all the way in, then set up all the other components, guides, chain, etc...then push in on the plunger again and it should snap out and against the tensioner shoe.
I use a flat screwdriver to reset mine.

its a good idea to buy a new one btw.. i was told by a chevy mechanic while changing mine that they tend to go bad sometimes (they will start ticking). he said while you are in there get a new one.... and be sure to push it ALL the way in (maybe further than you would think) when resetting it.
