How to change the third brake light?
Monday, May 02, 2005 6:46 PM
Ugh, ok. I can't seem to figure out how to get to the third brake light to change it. The passenger side bulb is out and I guess I'll just change both of them right away since they come in a 2 pack. Any suggestions or ideas? Only reason I found out about it is when my girlfriend was following me over to the repair shop when I took the car down to get the power steering pump replaced. Thanks folks.

Rear Window. Sorry for not specifying, I didn't think of the one on the spoiler since my car is spoilerless, LOL. : ) If I'm correct, and I can't check this since my car is back in the garage to get the new power steering pump replaced (yes, the new one lasted about 40 miles before going bad worse then the old one - LOL), it looks when I pull my back seats I can get into the trunk well enough and see that there is a opening that looks like an access panel for the third brake light. I'm assuming it's not to rough to get in there? I for the life of me can figure out how to take my rear deck lid off, don't know if I really want to attempt that or not. Thanks for the help.

According to your profile, you have a 97.....

If it's similar to my 2001, you fold the back of the back seat down, and pull out the plastic trim pieces. There is one on each side, about 1 foot tall.... to remove these, pull the top, and there is a little plastic push "bolt" that holds them in.

Pull them towards the front of the car to get the plastic out from the trunk area. Look behind them, you will see 4 clips that attach them to the large side rear panels. Bend the clip GENTLY with your finger, and pull the small plastic piece towards the opposite side.

Do this for both sides.

If you have the child restraint anchors on the rear deck, take off those plastic trim pieces.
You should now be able to lift the rear deck over the tab that latches the backrest of the seat.

Be VERY careful with the rear deck ends near the seatbelt slots. They're VERY fragile. I already broke one of mine, it now flaps because of this.

Slide the seatbelts through the slots in the rear deck, and it should come right out.

Hopefully this helps you.... (hopefully its also similar to my deck removal)

Good luck on the job.

I know it's JUST a Cavalier, and I'm sorry if I hurt your ego.

Just pop open your trunk and lean under the window, they're really easily to access

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to examine it more closely tomorrow since my car is back now. Doesn't sound too terribly bad either way.
