Weird Problems ... backfiring occasionally, other

I've asked about my enging problems a few other times, but no one's really been able to help. For about year or so now, my 96 2.2 occasionally has a big loss of power (bogs down) for just a bit. then it will be normal again. Also, sometimes, it'll backfire when it's experiencing that loss of power. Sometimes it won't start, either and when it does that it's gotten a check engine light, something about a lean fuel mixture.

I took it to a shop and they said my ECM was going bad, so I took it to a GM dealership, and they said my ECM was fine, but that my fuel pump might be going bad, but they're not sure.

anyhow, I'm frustrated. Anybody have any ideas?

I've had the same problem to the point where my car actually stalled (also a 96). When this happened i noticed my anti theft light was on i still havent figured it out yet so please if you figure it out post it.
on a side note when you shift at high rpm does your exhaust system buzz? I've only seen one other 96 in my area and when we raced it had a buzz also but i dont know if it was random on that car also.

What a pathetic shop.

how often does this happen? if its intermittent it could be something as simple as a lose connector somewhere, but those are a pita to find.

It's definitely intermittent. Usually never at all, but it still does happen.

Also, my exhaust smells pretty lousy, so I'm worried about it burning oil, or there being an exhaust leak.

Yeah the beauty of electronics in cars nowadays.
Could be many things. Any multitude of connectors, or wires in connectors.
Fuel filter, pressure regulator, fuel line flapper acting like a valve. Debris in the fuel tank. Bad ground, broken wire.
And any one of the many sensors. It needs to be checked on a scan tool, for freeze frame, and to check the sensors and fuel trim in real time.
