knock sensor

I had to splice some wires to get my manifold off and now I have a check engine light and it threw the knock sensor code.

1. what does a knock sensor sense?
2. is it bad to drive it with this code?
3. is it because I spliced my wires?

Probably something to do with splicing the wires Was there no other way to get the SOB off?

it was a real biatch to get to the one that went to the tranny. so I just spliced and sodered it for now. do I need a whole new wire loom? just a thought....or can I just get a new connector? i'm not quite sure what to do.
