Water Pump questions 2.4l - Getting ready to do it
Monday, May 09, 2005 9:09 AM
Hello guys,

I read the following forum topic with the pics and all
http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=11&i=50844&t=49879&arch=1#50844

Really good information. My biggest worries/questions are the following:

- How do you get the space to work with the bolt that mount the engine?
I understand it's a 18mm wrench but how is the motor moved enough
to remove the bolt?
- Some say remove the lower mount, some say no.
- Why is removing the exhaust manifold required. I looked at it Saturday
and can't tell why it needs to be removed.
- Is their a block drain plug. Sure can't find mine.
- Some say the timing cover gaskets are not required since they are reusable. Is this true?

1) Remove both engine mounts and jack it up and down to get to all the bolts. There is also a hole in the frame rail next to the upper mount that the head of the bolt will fit into to pull it out and remvoe the mount bracket.

2) Remove the lower mount to move the engine up and down better.

3) I have done it without on with a header on, but it wasn't easy. Remove the manifold if it is a stock one...there is even less room. You won't be able to get to the nuts holding the pump to the timing chain housing.

4) I disconnected the hose that connects to the flat metal pipe down at the bottom by the oil pan. It drained everything. I cant say 100% there is a block drain plug, but there has to be somewhere. Look over the back of the block...there is bound to be one.

5) Timing cover gaskets are not required. They are re-usable if they are not damaged.

^^^^^ yea what he said...

It is most deffently easier to do with the exhaust manifold off, just drain the radiator (peck cock at the drivers side), the pop the hose loose @ the back all the fluid should be gone that needs to be.

I didn't read that other post but if you have over 100k miles I would suggest changing the Chain tens, and maybe the guides since you already have all that out of there anyways. I now advance is selling the whole timing kit including guides for less than $150 If I remember correctly. This is normally a 500-600 dollar shop job.

Hit 200 NA it broke once, Hit 213 it broke again,
Hitting 300 NA is further away than I thought.

This is good news. I noticed the hole you mentioned. As for the guides and all, I already ordered them.

Because of how intensive the gear are to do, I didn't order them.

I think I have enough information to get started. I just have to make sure I find a strategic time. It's kind of hard with the little one.

If someone lives in the Milton, Ontario area, let me know through the forum if you interested in helping me out. I'll give ya $100 and free beers.

I could use a hand that has experience with this job.

just take your time and make sure everything is correct before you turn that key. Check the timing by turning the crank by hand first.

You turn it 2 complete turns and check to make sure the alignment pins still go through the cam gears and into the holes on the timing case. Read a Haynes or Chiltons manual. There are pictures too.

I have a Haynes and it has almost no information for the 2.4. Its the most useless thing I have and I wish I didnt waste money buying it.
