Me too, yay! I had a simliar recall on my '96, I heard if the car doesn't start, and you keep cranking it over, something could potentially catch fire.

Not a good enough excuse for my local dealer to molest my car, so I think I'll ignore it. Common sense says if the car doesn't start, diagnose it, don't catch @!#$ on fire!

I heard about it....

It has something to do with when trying to start the car, if it doesn't start because of some other problem, if you keep trying to crank it for longer than normal periods of time, it can heat up and cause a fire....

I'm gonna look for more info on it, but if anyone else can correct me, or add to this, feel free......

I had no plans to have it fixed until it was convenient for ME. Something like this, I wouldn't have a problem with.. if my car doesn't turn over, it means something else broke lol.. I don't keep trying

Here's the junk from Progressive's website........

"Recall Number: 04V036000
Dates Manufactured: MAR 2000 to APR 2001
Number of Vehicles Affected: 1415231
Date Owners Notified On: Unavailable
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES. IF THE ENGINE FAILS TO START AND THE DRIVER HOLDS THE KEY IN THE "START" POSITION FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD, HIGH CURRENT FLOWS THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH, AND SOMETIMES PRODUCES ENOUGH HEAT TO MELT INTERNAL SWITCH PARTS.
Consequence of Defect:
IF THE SWITCH IS DAMAGED, A FIRE COULD OCCUR IN THE STEERING COLUMN, EVEN WITH THE ENGINE OFF AND THE KEY REMOVED. THE FIRE COULD SPREAD TO THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR, WHICH COULD INJURE OCCUPANTS OR CAUSE DAMAGE TO ADJOINING STRUCTURES.
Corrective Action:
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A RELAY KIT IN THESE VEHICLES TO PREVENT HIGH CURRENT FROM FLOWING THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH, AND CHECK THAT YOUR CAR WILL START WITH A PROPERLY CHARGED BATTERY AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING FEBRUARY 2004. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537. CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CHECK THEIR VEHICLE ONLINE BY GOING TO WWW.MYGMLINK.COM AND ENTERING THE VEHICLE'S IDENTIFICATION NUMBER. "

I agree with the guy about the dealer mechanics molesting his car. I think it would be better to just get the parts and directions and dyi. It is really pretty simple, it sounds like they have a relay operating the starter solenoid. Some what similar to the old Ford system.

i took my car into my chevy dealer for the recall. my car was there for 6 hours. only because i didnt wait at the dealer, so they took their sweet time. it really only took 30 minutes to maybe an hour to do. still doesnt seem like my car is fixed, i noticed the problem with the ignition getting worse after i bought it 3 days ago. i have started it up 5 times or so since i got it 'fixed' seems like its acting up again...round two at the chevy dealer.

My wife just took her 01 Cav LS into the dealer for the recall. They took 2 hours to do it, and then decieded to give her a list of "recommended" maintenance. Including replacement of the fuel filter, water pump, etc. All stuff that's been done in the last 6 months by me.

They top it off with "it needs an oil change". She told the service writer that I take care of that. He laughed and yelled at the shop guys "Her husband takes care of that!" and smirked.

Dealerships blow.

Yeah, I took my 2000 cavalier in for this recall 4 or 5 months ago, and the guy treated me like crap because I was young. He kept telling me that I needed an oil change (even though I had just had one done) and he went down a list of things that I should have them do to the car. I just told him no, because I could do it all myself, and much cheaper.

Dealers can be dicks. They had my car for 5 hours I believe. It really sucked, because they said it would only be an hour or so.
