Question on alternator
Saturday, May 21, 2005 10:54 AM
I got a 96 2.4L cavalier for free that has been sitting for 2 years and was told the motor was seized on it. I pulled the motor out and everything and tested it before I pulled it out and it didnt turn over or click but I had all the lights and everything on inside the dash. The car backfired on the highway supposedly and they pulled over shut the engine off and then tried to start it and it just clicked. Im assuming they figured it was seized up.

Now to my question... I tried to turn the engine over by hand by the crank pulley and the alternator is stuck causing the motor to not turn. I pulled out the alternator off and the crank pulley turns so it doesnt seem to be a seized motor if Im testing it right correct? Could the alternator have possibly seized up and caused it to act as if the motor seized? I really think it may be the alternator but dont feel like getting a new alternator then I have to put the motor back in and have it not be what it was.

Thanks

The alternator pulley should free spin with no belt attached. If it doesn't, time for a new alternator.

As for the acting like a seized engine, that I am not certain.

If the car has been sitting for a couple years, especially with the battery still connected, the alternator could be near death anyway.

Nevermind... I took the starter off and I notice something is broke inside the motor. A little metal piece is hanging down that looks broken Ill try and get a pic of it up as soon as I can to see if someone knows what acually broke.

Thanks anyways
