Could be a failsafe built into the computer. In case of a fuel leak, the engine will shut off to prevent a fire/explosion.

You hit the Ecm?

both time I took the ditch with my 91 retta, it didn't stop and I even went in the ditch a 70km/h, the airbag didn't deploy and the car was still running.

Newer cars have safety cut off things.

For example Chsryler uses a ASD relay, automatic shutdown relay, if the vehicle is shaken abruptly it will shut off the fuel pump.

In Ford and GM I believe both use interia switchs, again an abrupt hit will shut off the fuel pump, causing it to stall.

When I was rear ended in my Cav it was still running...

When my G/F did a face plant into the side of a box truck her neon was still running...

If anything it's a safety devise, and probally going to depend on the car and the type of accident.

Were not talking about a minor fender bender, usually it is designed for accident above 20-25+mph.

Crash into the the back of an SUV at 30mph I wil bet you a million bucks your car will shut off.
