I noticed a egg smell coming from my car the other day. I did'nt even have to go near the exhaust pipe to smell it. This was on Tuesday since then it is not as bad. In order to smell it you actually have to go right near the exhaust pipe. I don't think its the oxygen sensor because I have no CEL, I dont think its the converter cause my car runs fine and I have good gas mileage. My best guess would be bad gas, I switched back to Shell and it got better.
What I want to know is if it is normal for it to smell a little like egg when you are that close to the exhaust pipe, all gas does have a little sulfur in it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
only time i've ever smelled an egg smell (besides when the car was egged) was when the smell was actually inside the car. it was the heater core going bad. i've never heard of an exhaust pipe smelling like eggs.
on a side note, do us all a favor and go stick your nose into your exhaust pipe and have a friend take a picture of it. we could use a good laugh
GO PATS!!!
Most of the time the smell does come from the exhaust pipe...no on the picture
can some one help me with this.
Thanks
I had the egg smell twice..... both the times it was the cat. Once in a while it will be the gas, but I still put my money on the cat.

thats how you know the cat is bad
IF the cat is bad does that mean the car loses power? I noticed the egg smell on my car whenever I would drive it a little hard. So, if the car is bad am I losing performance?
How can you tell if it is the cat or just bad gas. Right now it barely smells like egg...just when you get real close. I mean there is not performance problems, good acceleration and smooth idle. it got better as soon as i switched to shell.

rotten eggs is always a sure sign of a bad cat

not if you are getting on it. youll know your cat is bad when your O2 sensor after the cat trips a code. if you are WOT and it smells like egg its because the cat is working, get behind any new car thats WOT and you will smell it. especially here where theres bad traffic and lots of heat.
I'd say it's fuel or something of that nature personally. I smelled my Cat on a couple occasions when I had broken brackets and a busted up Flex Piece on the down pipe on my exhaust. Now that that is all fixed up I don't smell the Cat anymore even when I'm getting on it while pulling a hill. If it's not tripping a code I wouldn't worry about it yet personally although it could be a sign of some other exhaust work may be needed in the future (brackets replaced and all that, not necessarily the cat itself...).
I don't know about you guys, but whenever I smell rotten eggs, it's usually because someone around me has some really bad gas.
if uve been going to a @!#$ty gas station u might have somthing growing in the bottom of ur tank (happend to a friend) try to rule everything else out first cause gas tanks r a pain
