My 1997 Cavalier Z24 has the twin cam 2.4 with 120k miles. It has been using a quart of oil every 1000 miles. Is this normal? There are no oil leaks anywhere on this engine and from what I was told there is no PCV system so I know it isn't a faulty PVC valve. I know engines tend to use some oil but not as much as my car. What could be causing this oil consumption?
If its not leaking it, it must be consuming it. The piston rings over time wear out and seal less, oil can get into the combustion chamber, notice any blue smoke out your exhaust, mainly from a dead stop, yeah thats your piston rings.
By the way it isnt normal by todays standards for cars to consume any oil, I dont know where you heard that from.

My 99 LD9 consumes about 3/4 of a quart every oil change. Deal said it is normal for LD9's and many people said it is the same on their cars, but 1 quart every 1000 miles is bad piston rings.
