Ok, i just recently got a 95 Sunfire GT with the 2.3 engine. Alittle after i got it, it would make a rattling sound if you started it after it had been run for awhile. Lately it has been getting pretty bad, it seems to be comming from the timing chain/serpentine belt area. Any idea of what would be wrong? It has 213000km on it right now. Thanks
Ah yes. The mysterious rattle our cars are notorious for. Should make your car sound like one of those Jetta Diesels, right? Based on where you have described and the mention that it is worst when engine is at temp, my best guess is the timing chain.
i had the same thing happen last year and it ended up being a bent rod and i had to get a new engine put in and now its doing the same thing again
The thing is it is pretty random. It more or less sounds like someone is dragging a big heavy chain across the pavement.
My 95 GT (2.3) makes a noise like that (but kinda quiet) when I first start it up... but once it warms up it goes away??? I do have a timing chain cover seal leak (not that bad, just have to add a little oil once in a while until I can get it fixed)... could this be the same thing??
Well, it is usually pretty quiet, i cant hear it in the car unless i have the window down and pull up next to something. Its just that sometimes it is pretty loud.... if i remember, there was a seal replaced, not sure if the previous owner said it was the timing chain seal cover or not, but i remember they said it seal in that area, so it is hard to say. I was just worried that it is something major, but it is seeming that it isnt.

Yup, mine was a snapped connecting rod on piston #1. Still sitting in my driveway, i need a new crankshaft because I was a tard and drove with it sounding like a deisel.
